Air Filter Change - Lee - 10-22-2020

I changed the air filter again on our bikes today and took a few pictures so you can see what's under the tupperware.
These are the only panels that need to be removed.
   

The BMW shop manual shows removing the winglets first but I did not bother this time.

Here's what it looks like naked.
   

   

   

   

Fasteners are missing from the gas cap because we use tank bags secured by a tank ring.

I like to keep the fasteners organized as I remove them.
If I miss a fastener when reinstalling, I know where it goes.
This time when done with the first bike I saw I had 4 fasteners that hold the gas tank assembly to the tank in the container. Good thing it's easy to remove the tupperware Smile

Just changed the air filter in my '19 GSA today. Four screws to get the tank ring off, seven screws to get the single piece of plastic tank cover off. Same four screws to access airbox, same filter. Replacement time was about 15 minutes.

Yep the GS is easier than the RS. Does the GS and GSA have the same setup?

Having just watched alien covenat yesterday I'd have to agree. Tongue Hopefully no alien creatures will tear their way out of the crankcase.

I like that. No need to remove any side fairings.

I think it was around 26 screws recently.

No matter what the old filter looks like, your not going to leave it in after digging for so long.

I've seen paper diagrams with fasteners gently laid in place, I've seen cardboard diagrams with fasteners pushed through the cardboard where they belong on the part, and now parts in little plastic Tupperware containers. Have you tried magnetic parts mats ala https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Project-Showpin-Large-Marker/dp/B01F58KL96 ?

Thank you for that info, Lee. I found out about this forum by watching Grumpy Goat's YouTube video. I remember you from the i-BMW.com days, SGR, and such. I rode a black K1300S with my pal Beech. He's still on his grey K1300S, plus a red one, plus a M-model, etc. I checked EuroMoto Electric, and if I order two air filters plus shipping I'm saving four dollars from just buying it from Seattle BMW Cycle. They have really good free coffee, so think I'll just ride over there to get a new air filter. Bought my '22 RS White last September, only have 8,000 miles on her.

Yep. I changed the air filters a couple weeks ago on our RSs a couple weeks ago and changed them even though they looked clean.
When I blew through them with the air compressor I didn't see much dust.
20,900 miles on one and 20,500 miles on the other.
Working with the stainless steel tank center on the R1250RS was better than the plastic tank center on the R1200RS.

It's a plastic label scraper.
I use it for delicate prying. Maybe I used it to push on the side panel tab.

Yesterday, I replaced the air filter, but didn't find anything that might indicate my sluggish performance.  However, somewhere between the left side intake snorkel and the tank fairings, this guy entered the area behind the radiator and forward of the fuel tank to spend their final moments.      

On the right side of the engine, I found a large Monarch butterfly which had suffered a similar fate

Good question.

Makes me wish I had backflushed some air thru the snorkels before closing the airbox and installing the tank fairing panels.

I've had bird strikes I did not hear or feel.
A few times I saw them headed at me or I saw the feathers in my mirrors.
Some times Debbie would tell me I hit a bird.

I remember one time a guy on a K1200GT pulled over because his bike was loosing power. When he walked in front of his bike he found a bird stuffed into the snorkel.
