Adding Another BMW to the Garage - R1250RT - darrell - 04-05-2022

I bought a new 2022 R1250RT.

Ordered 12/30/21
Vin Number 1/18/22
Production Date 1/28/22
Factory Departure 1/31/22
Ship Loaded 2/15/22
Ship Departure 2/18/22
New Jersey Port Arrival 3/9/22
BMW PA Processing Center 3/23/22
MN Dealer Arrival 3/30/22
Owner Delivery - 4/12/22

I looked at the RT, RS, GT and GSA before settling on the RT. I already own a RS I really like and the new ones did not offer me much more then I had other then the engine and TFT screen so decided to wait until a newer version is available.  The GT is what I went to buy when I got my 2016 RS but decided against then because of the weight and still the case now.  I have a 21 year old GSA so already have that model and would enjoy a new one but thought I'd order mine when the new 1300 cc models come out.  So that left the RT if I wanted to buy a new bike.

Mineral White (719 color), full 719 classic package on the bike except seat, radio/XM package, tall seat, and BMW driving lights. Added the trunk, some head/rear protection bars, Clearwater lights front and rear, extra mirrors and a few other little items I want with the bike.

I find the reconfigured RT since the 2021 model with the reduced fairing size, tall seat and standard handlebars is not much of a seating position change from the RS model.

I still own and will ride the 140,000 mile 2016 R1200RS as well as my 133,000 mile 2002 R1150GSA.  I last owned a RT in 1981 when I traded in my 1979 R100RT on a 1982 R100RS. And have not rode a RT since so this will be a bit of a change.  I am traveling enough to know I am tiring of the constant wind pounding on me so wanted something with a bit more protection. John Lange spent a good deal of time with me talking about the RT and why I should consider in addition to my RS. If John was still with us I’m sure he would be happy I now own one.

Once it is fully set up and I get my hands on it I’ll share a photo or two. Being this is a RS Owners forum I’ll minimize any comment on the RT but you are welcome to contact me with a PM if you want to discuss anything.

Nice post Darrell - thanks for sharing. Even though this is an RS forum please do feel free to post as much as you like on the RT in the "Other Bikes" sub-forum. That is what it is there for, and I for one will enjoy seeing the content especially since if I do get another BMW it will be a toss up between the GS (still trying to ignore that nag from my left brain) and the RT.

I do think that the RT is probably the one of the best looking BMWs out there at the moment, and as a tourer it is not too big and heavy (at least compared with the K1600 family).

Atta boy!

I had a 2004 RT and a 2004 K1200RS, at the same time. The RT did not have cruise control, the RS did, so I kept the RS longer and the RT not so long. Gotta have that cruise control, which is so common now.

I guess you are adding mirrors to the handlebars? I'll see when you post pictures.

I have tested the GT a couple of times, I like it better on paper than in real, physical life. It's too big and too heavy for my taste also.

If the weather cooperates, I am guessing 2 days to get to the 600 mile service mark.

Congratulations! Wonderful bike.

As I recall, another accurate prediction from the Vvrroomm garage. Well done.

I can corroborate this. The picture does it NO justice. It's gorgeous!

Right - the humbling part - it will look no different after 150,000 miles and still better than any bike I've ever ridden.

Nicely done. The RT is a great bike. I'm certain you'll like it. I had a fully kitted '18 RT that I traded a GL1800 for as the winger was overall just too heavy and also really just didn't help satisfy my enjoyment of twisty road riding. While I really liked the RT it proved to be simply too tall for my 29" inseam legs even with the low seat (no low suspension version was available from BMW in 2018). That led me to the RS and it's been nirvana since. Enjoy the ride. ?

Sweet!

As much of a fan of black that I am, I think the RT looks best in white. Those 719 classic head covers look good but are ridiculously expensive -- are they aluminum or magnesium?

Great pic of the new steed, Darrell!

Looks fantastic! It’s the newest in your garage so it should get the most miles. What a problem to have! Congrats

Here is the bike and owner in action ... from today. Photos courtesy of a friend.

Interesting that the front side reflectors are mounted directly on the fork tube. Hadn't seen that before. Is that a R3 Stealth suit? Nice -- probably going to order an R3 myself.

Classic Stealth. i don't like the unlined suits. This is my spring and fall suit as warmer then the 2 piece Klim suits and I can layer up as much as I need underneath.

5% discount if you ride in and try on suits for size before ordering.

I’d not thought about the reflectors being mounted on the forks themselves. I’ll have to look at some other models.
