Hold on sales of 2023 RS bikes? - windyrun - 03-13-2023

I went to a local dealer to see a 2023 R1250RS. They had two - a white one and a black one. The dealer (District) told me there was a hold on the bikes so they could not be delivered if purchased. They checked and said it was something related to a recall on risk of broken gearbox input shaft. Same was true for a couple of their R bikes

Anyone know more about this?

First I am hearing of this problem or recall ...  Huh If there is a recall it is not filed with NHTSA for the 2023 R1250RS. I did not check all the 1250 R-bikes as there are quite a few records on the NHTSA site.

Where is your dealer located?

UPDATE - Sorry those links don't lead to the search results. In the first case I searched for 2023 R 1250 RS (spaces are important) and in the second case I searched for R 1250.

RE: Hold on sales of 2023 RS bikes? - windyrun - 03-13-2023

Dealer is located in Maryland. It's not, apparently, a do not ride/safety recall. Also, a friend checked the BMW database and a bike I was interested in is not listed.

Another rider I heard from just bought a bike from another dealer and that one also told the rider (in another forum) that they had a bike with the recall (on drive shaft).

It all seems a bit unclear which is why I was checking here if anyone else has heard of this.

I also am asking since I am interested in a white or black bike. The white one is at the dealer with the hold.

Also, the white one has the tubular bars and the black one has the more typical RS bars.

Thanks. The driveshaft "non-issue" has not been covered by any sort of service advisory / recall / whatever from BMW Motorrad as far as I know, although there have been failures of the yokes of these driveshafts on several R- bikes including the RS. Haven heard anything about any gearbox input shaft.

There is an advisory on the driveshaft housing for R-bikes other than the RS (GS and RT), where the owners have been advised to bring the affected bikes in to have a small rubber duck-bill valve retro-fitted in the underside of the driveshaft housing. It is felt that this will better evacuate water in the housing thereby reducing surface rusting at the rear spline.

Optional tubular bars. Do you like them? Some do.

My next door neighbor took delivery of his new 2023 R1250 RS (red/white/blue) on February 18th from MAX BMW in Brunswick NY. No holds or issues listed by the dealer at all.

Thanks for the feedback/info. All seems a bit odd regarding the hold.

Regarding the tubular bars, I test rode the white one (yes they said I could ride it but it couldn't be sold) and I did like the bars though they push the bar ends out more square to the rider rather than back some like clip ons (I currently ride an S1000RR so am used to bars being angled back towards me). The seating position seemed good and comfy. I did notice that when cornering if I tried to hang off the RS it quickly dipped in much more rapidly than I am used to; not sure if that's due to the tubular bars having more leverage or just the nature of the bike. My thinking from one ride is I would most likely prefer risers on typical RS bars for more comfort (reason I am considering adding this bike) than the stock tubular ones (I don't think they are the same as the bars on the R1250R which are quite comfy).

I think that it is the bars. The RS with standard bars is not what I would call easy to tip in, especially compared to an S1000RR. It is a sport bike but at the same time one with a bit longer wheelbase and rake angle so it well favours directional stability, which makes it slightly stiff on the tip in. Requires a firm hand.

So you,re saying there's a longer reach with the tubular bars?
Are they approx the same height as the standard RS bars.

A few weeks ago another member here or the other RS forum mentioned the Stop sale but it did not affect the RS he wanted.

Here's the thread with not much information.

Regarding my experience with the tubular bars ... They were about the same height as the std RS bars while sitting on either one in showroom. The thing I noticed while riding was more of an elbows out (just a very small amount mind you) on the bike with the tubular bars but same reach. If you look at the configurator and click on/off on the tubular bars option you can see they both have similar feel just tubular bar ends a bit up and forward a tad which is my experience riding (done before looking at the configurator). Hope this makes sense. Link below:

Thanks. In the past I found it difficult to see the reach and height difference with the configurator view.
It's too bad BMW does not give measurements of both bars.
It would  be nice if they also compared to the standard R bars and the lower R Sport bars.
I don't think the R Sport bars are still available as a option on the 2023 but a person can order them from the parts department.

Uodate: dealer phoned and left message saying they made a mistake and there is no hold on the bike.

Amazing the people who work at these dealerships ...  Rolleyes  He could have lost the sale if you had already bought a different bike. No wonder there is a high turnover.

RE: Hold on sales of 2023 RS bikes? - windyrun - 03-20-2023

Well they just may have lost the sale. I didn't buy it since they said it couldn't be sold. They called me to let me know of the error. I am still on the fence as to ... black or white and standard bars (with riser) or tubular bars (with riser).... they are the only dealer locally with tubular bars (isn't that a song from the 70's. haha)

1973 to be precise ...  Smile A shape like this wouldn't do much good ...

Like I mentioned above you're the 2nd person to get the stop sale info and shortly after find out the information was wrong.
It's possible there was a miscommunication between the owner of the shop and BMW USA.
