12k Service - Liteitup - 05-13-2020

What kind of money should I expect the dealership to charge for a 12k service? With and without the 2 year brake flush.
Is $1k with a brake flush reasonable? $800ish without?

My first BMW and I typically do my own service, but I thought I'd have this one done and on the BMW books, just in case.

Location can make a difference.
If I remember right you live in Texas?

In the US there's no problem with you doing your own service.
If you want to support your dealer buy your supplies from them.

RE: 12k Service - Olgry1 - 05-13-2020

The 12K service cost on my 1250 RT last October was just under $800 with the brake fluid change. The service cost for the 1200RS and the 1250 should be very similar if not the same.
I live in the suburbs of Chicago and there are three BMW motorcycle dealers in the Chicagoland area.

Hope that helps.

RE: 12k Service - Liteitup - 05-13-2020

Thanks.

Yes, Central Texas. Waco, halfway between Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin. No local dealer, closest is about 90 miles away. Both, one in DFW and one in Austin, quoted $1kish for full service. I was expecting about $600, no particular reason or basis, just what I expected.

I'll do my own going forward.

RE: 12k Service - darrell - 05-13-2020

I’ve done nothing to my 2016 R1200RS bike personally except ride it, put gas in it, taking it to the dealer I bought it from for everything. I’d done enough of my own services for 45 years on my bikes.

Service ($5689.02)
Cost per mile - $0.061

998 miles - $208.32
7735 miles - $158.36
11725 miles - $332.69
17958 miles - $140.85
22788 miles - $470.16
29040 miles - $182.56
36946 miles - $448.52
43969 miles - $200.32
50232 miles - $794.29 fork oil change
55396 miles - $203.96
61947 miles - $506.74
69254 miles - $191.46
70269 miles - $337.72 new battery and rear brake pads
76209 miles - $451.46
82677 miles - $182.41
90200 miles - $425.86
93032 miles - $453.34 fork oil and brake fluid

RE: 12k Service - Liteitup - 05-20-2020

Ended up being $962.58

RE: 12k Service - Grumpy Goat - 05-20-2020

What did you end up getting done for that $1k?

RE: 12k Service - Liteitup - 05-21-2020

Oil and filter, spark plugs, air filter, valve check, oil in rear drive, brake flush, and a walk around. And they washed the bike.
Actually, it was a good experience except for the price.

That's the important thing.

Thanks.

I now have the warning for my next service in 600 miles, and with the long weekend coming I will be doing this 48,000 mile service myself. It is required to cover: Replace oil and filter, spark plugs, air filter, oil in rear drive, and valve check. A brake flush is also recommended.

I will inspect and clean the plugs but not replace them as they are newer. Since the plugs and oil will be out I will check the valve clearances too. I had decided that with every rear drive oil change I will inspect the drive shaft splines and universal joints. This will be the first time doing that. Confused May wash the bike after although it is presently clean enough.

I will most likely leave the brake fluid flush for another occasion in the near future.

RE: 12k Service - Olgry1 - 05-21-2020

Liteitup, I agree with Lee... if you are happy that is all that really matters.

In the future you may want to think about asking them to not replace the valve cover and the gaskets that keep the spark plugs oil free. They will often last a relatively long time and if cleaned well and installed when oil free they will not leak.

RE: 12k Service - Liteitup - 05-21-2020

Thanks for the input everyone. As stated, I prefer to do my own wrenching but wanted this service documented to protect the remaining warranty. The experience at the dealer was pleasant and I can't complain as the price charged was exactly what was quoted. I was disappointed they didn't provide the valve clearance numbers to me with explanation I didn't ask for them when dropping off. True enough, just seemed like something they would record. Not a big deal and like I said, it was a pleasant experience all around.

RE: 12k Service - Motorhead1977 - 08-14-2023

In advance of the upcoming 12k service we (I mostly watched and Boxflyer from over on the BMWST forum did most of the work) did a cam timing and valve clearance check. Both were off a little bit so all was put back in spec and new plugs were installed. Would have completed the rest but it's a 3 hour ride home for me so we only did the valve service and reset the computers. Result? It's like a different bike. It was a great ride before but now it's scary quick and fast.
Dealer will do the balance as I prefer to support them when possible.

Hey Motorhead1977. Funny you should mention Boxerflyer. I’m catching up with him next month, for the same service on my ‘16 RS. I typically take care of all of the maintenance myself, but after talking with Brad, decided to see if there could be an improvement by “blueprinting” the factory specs. Your experience is encouraging

@Duccrazydave, are you going to be at FART? If so we'll introduce ourselves. As mentioned, Brad's service transformed my 1250RS. Hopefully you are as pleased with the outcome on yours.

RE: 12k Service - Duccrazydave - 08-16-2023

I will be there, but just on Saturday morning, for the bike service, then hang out the rest of the day.  My work schedule interferes with the other days of the rally.

RE: 12k Service - Motorhead1977 - 08-16-2023

Hope to meet you then.

RE: 12k Service - Duccrazydave - 08-17-2023

Looking forward to it WAM_thumbsup

Hey Motorhead1977. Made the AM (soggy and windy) trip up to Sparta, yesterday, for the previously mentioned service. Looked for another RS, in the multitude of bikes (!), but didn’t see you, or just missed you, while I was there.
Grabbed breakfast (which Boxflyer graciously covered) while the bike was cooling down. Then helped him set up the tents, rolled the bike on the lift and watched him, methodically and meticulously knock out the cam timing/valve adjustment. After that, he used the GS911 to reset the adaptive values. Then, off the lift, into the parking lot for up/down gear change cycling and cooling fan activation.
It’s an amazing service he’s providing to the BMW riding community. He’s equipped for most anything, oil changes, tire changes, etc.
Brad (Boxflyer) said I was valve service #156. I’m happy to also report a positive outcome, evident even before traveling 2 blocks from the parking lot. Smoother idle, acceleration and up/down shift assist gear changes.
I’ve included some pics and my spec sheet. [Image: 1dc9e1e75d635b58e0db5d2a66c8a8b6.jpg]
