That’s one down. I wonder if others have had theirs done and what was their experience. Almost sounds like one has to book the bike in for some [other] reason and while there they may “discover” that your bike is eligible and then do the replacement, likely at some other time because “they didn’t account for that extra work on this visit and they’re booked solid”.  Dodgy

I would wait til next tire change and have both done at same time.

That is a good idea for some but not for me since I intend to do the next tire change myself. Looking forward to it, actually, since I get to use my new tire changer. That reminds me ... I need to pull out my unused Cycle Hill tire changer and take some photos for the sale ad.

I believe my fork seals need to be changed. I may have the shop do that.

Was the drive shaft replaced free because of the service campaign or did you pay for it?

I thought I saw that video last year but the date shows it was yesterday.
I see owners in the UK have been getting free replacements.

I have not watched all the video to see if it applies to the US.

This video was posted yesterday. He did an earlier video about the duck bill valve, which from what I am understanding, is being treated separately from the driveshaft replacement. Not sure if he also did an earlier video on the driveshaft replacement.

Not sure what freeing the driveshaft replacement means.

RE: Service Bulletin but not for the RS? - Lee - 02-24-2024

Had time to watch the video.
Got the PDF of the service bulletin from the RS Forum but it's not labeled as being from BMW USA.
The bulletin was dated Dec 12, 2023
It didn't see on the video if the bulletin is worldwide.

From the video he said the duckbill valve have to be done first.
If you have the vent installed you can get a new driveshaft at 37,280 miles.
Not sure if the vent and driveshaft replacement can be done at the same service.

Typo now corrected in post above. That is what happens when you type on this stupid little phone.

All part of the confusion. I too am unsure what markets are getting what fixes. For instance Mark got the driveshaft but his bike was not eligible (?) for the duckbill. Personally I believe the duckbill is a waste of time, and the fact that not all bikes are getting it supports that.

I don't see how BMW could say that only certain markets are covered. The Youtube video indicated that all the K models from the K50 to the K54 and the years from 2013 to 2024 depending on the model was covered. This has to be world wide. I believe he indicated that it was not even necessary that the "duckbill" service be performed. He also indicated that the "free" replacement was to be done at 60000 km. I think that if you have already have had to have this done that I would contact BMW to see if they would cover the charge.

I would worry about knocking it out of place when washing the bikes. I use a soft brush on the underside of the driveshaft case and final drive.
I thought all the R bikes got the duckbill at the factory in 2023.

I thought he said the opposite. I need to re-watch the video.

At least Mark's dealer did not require the duckbill.

RE: Service Bulletin but not for the RS? - Duckbubbles - 02-25-2024

My '23, build date 12/22 came with the duckbill from the factory as far as I can tell. Doesn't seem to be that easy to dislodge without a little effort. Something to be aware of when washing.

RE: Service Bulletin but not for the RS? - soch - 02-25-2024

Yeah, my '23 with a build date of 06/23 came with both vent valves on the swingarm assy

RE: Service Bulletin but not for the RS? - Toruk - 02-27-2024

Does anyone know for a fact that the 23 spec bikes that came with the duckbill rear lower vent ALSO got the front splines greased at the factory? Nice to know that BMW stands behind their products! The shaft drive was an important part of my decision to purchase my 23 RS.

RE: Service Bulletin but not for the RS? - Oldrider51 - 02-27-2024

I don't believe that anyone could say for certain that BMW did or did not grease the front splines of the driveshaft at the factory on the 23 bikes. I think that one would have to assume that BMW did grease the front splines unless that day the person to do it was not there or decided not to.

I have lubricated the rear splines on my 16 RS twice and both times pulled the front splines back a little but not off the output shaft so I know mine is not stuck. Next time I will lubricate both ends.

RE: Service Bulletin but not for the RS? - mojoguzzi - 03-14-2024

I've got the free replacement scheduled for next week (22 March 2024) (along with new tires and valve check). They indicated in effect that the first replacement is free; thereafter, I'm liable for the next 36k-mile shaft replacement

Thanks. Good to know.
