I wonder if they've decided that DVDs are old technology and going for something more up-to-date, like an online subscription service.

Yes, they are going to to a online subscription. I think one of the MOA links I posted talks about it.
I think the system is in place now for dealers.

That makes a lot of sense, Mike, but maybe not so much a technology thing, as opposed to a cost / benefit thing - for them. Aside from a recurring payment they could track what people are looking at to gain intel about what areas are being worked on by DIYers ... Huh

No one could then accuse them of not offering a manual while at the same time many would be hesitant to buy a subscription-based manual, thereby achieving the same goal ...

If I'm remembering right dealers pay in the thousands for a subscription.
Car dealer have been using this system for awhile.

So since BMW are now going to offer the repair manual again it's clear the end result is that the reason given by BMW (...due to the increasing technical complexity of our new bikes...) as reported in ON is exactly what I said it was: pure BS and a money grab. I'm never impressed by a company that lies to their customers. This behavior is very disconcerting, at least to me. SHAME ON YOU BMW ?‍☠️

Nice article in the month's AMA news about "right to repair" with a reminder that one can approach their legislators through the AMA website to support current bills that address this issue.

Ray, I think a concerted effort by every motorcycle owner in each state via the AMA would be awesome!

RE: service manual options - Motorhead1977 - 09-22-2022

Ray I also noted that this is a one house only bill - HR and no matching (same as) Senate bill. Wouldn't it be great if we could get a "same as" bill sponsored in the US Senate so if passed in each house it could just go to conference committee for any needed adjustments? I'm going to write my US Senators from NY. Who knows as in the House of Representatives it appears to have both R and D co- sponsors.

RE: service manual options - Pyrrho - 09-23-2022

I had bought a bunch of lights. Thought I'd save some time and ask my dealer to install; they said they're backed up through the end of November. OK, so I'll take my pirated R1200RS manual and see how far I got. Pretty far, except when I got to the front fairing bits and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get farther without breaking something. So with much sadness and great waste of time, I put everything back together and will tackle it at a future time.

If BMW isn't providing service information to their customers then their customers should be provided BMW service options within a reasonable timeframe -- not that they'll be able to fit you in "in a few months". That's complete f'ing BS and turning me completely off the brand.
