Did something fall off my bike? - Grumpy Goat - 05-25-2020

While working on my bike today I noticed this. It looks like something is missing in the indicated area in the first photo, and zoomed in from underneath in the second. Weird.

Do you all have the same detail?

Whatever it is (was), mine's gone missing too! Big Grin
I'm guessing some extra bore in the case for some other model?
At first, the plastic piece looked like a gasket.

Keep in mind my engine has been out of the bike but I trust me mechanic put it back in correctly. My holes in the parts are lined up exactly to the holes. Both the large hole and the small one exactly in front of the side stand are exactly over the holes. The smallest rear one has a zip tie in it to hold that wire likely for the side stand switch and oxygen sensor wire. In between these two holes there is a 3rd hold that has a small screw or bolt which must control exactly how the plastic sits over the holes and tightly against the metal. On your your bike Wayne I can’t tell if you have this screw/bolt. Also notice your cable for the oxygen sensor has some fraying.

Darrell’s bike photo of area in question along with photo of tools used to clean this area[attachment=602][attachment=603]

I believe those are factory tooling holes to allow jigs or fixtures to be used during the production process.

No I don't have that small screw - that missing screw is what made me wonder if something fell off. Will have a second look at the O2 sensor wiring - thanks.

Whew! That is good to know that yours and Darrell's bikes have the same arrangement. Agree that it might we there for some other model. Kind of crappy to keep the gasket there flopping around and doing nothing, though.

Good point, but the gasket and the screw .... I'd think that any jig pin would not need that for temporary use ... strange.

That plastic piece is actually the forward end of a protective tray that extends to the rear of the transmission for the wiring to the sidestand and 02 sensor.

Thanks Frank. I must lie down on the floor and take a closer look. Smile

Both of ours look like Darrell's.
Fastener in place, both wires zip tied together, but not through the hole.

Thanks Lee. Now I have to find the fastener and get one. Undecided

Frank

I found the part but it does not show the fastener in order to know the size.

Brilliant. Thanks Lee. Regarding the bolt - maybe I will drop into the dealer and give them a "test" Wink

I could not get a good look at mine.
I'm guessing the cable duct can't go anywhere even without the bolt.

Your guess is correct, Lee.

The bolt’s sole function at this point seems to be to (a) stop that end of the cable tray from bending outwards and (b) aligning the hole in the tray with the hole in the block.

Getting a replacement bolt is not a high priority for me.
