Auxiliary power to dash area - multistraddler - 11-01-2020
Has anyone added an auxiliary power plug to their RS that could be used to charge items in a tank bag? I installed a marine usb unit on the dash of my KTM 1090, but that was a doddle because KTM thoughtfully provided a couple of low amp leads off the wiring loom at the front of the bike. I haven’t looked yet, but guessing that is not the case with the RS? I could tap into the headlight wires for switched power, but I generally try to avoid those kinds of hacks for fear of unnerving the canbus.

On my ‘16RS I just added length to the charging lead and routed it to my tank bag. The USB port has an on/off switch so there’s no drain when not using. Quick unplug of the usb for normal charging.

If you’re not using a tank bag, I’m sure there are no shortage of options from other forum members.

When charging while i ride, i route the usb cable through the little wing on the left and into the tank bag to keep it from flopping around. When charging while parked at a coffee shop i keep an eye on the voltage identified to make sure i have enough power to start the bike.

Clever! And simple. I already had a SAE connection for charging and when I looked behind the panel covering the battery, lo and behold, the wires I had wadded up in there were plenty long to reach the tankbag. I already had an SAE to Usb adapter, so job done.
I'll just have to remember to unplug power hungry devices. My El Cheapo adapter does not have an on/off switch.

Very slick! This is similar to the route I took with my KTM. However, I’ve found the electrical connection to be iffy in the wet. Could be the cable I’m using, but it does not always charge.

A friend was stranded once near Little Rock and by the time he was able to contact a tow truck and give his location his phone was almost dead.
After that I carry the same USB adapter you show and keep it in my tankbag.
I have never used it but it's there just in case.

I started to carry a AntiGravity jump pack also. Guess I don't need to carry the little adapter charger anymore.

Years ago I installed one of these Powerlet cigarette sockets in my dash and it has worked perfectly ever since. It is not cheap but the quality is excellent. If you want something that will last the life of the bike you will have to pay for it, and since I drilled the hole in my dash I don't want the component to fail. I use a 2 x USB adapter that lives inside the cigarette socket - that way I have both types of connection possible. It is wired directly to my battery so no messing with the CAN-Bus network, and while it is not switched, there is no draw if there is nothing plugged in.
