Says lots of nice things but then says he prefers the excitement / riding experience of the naked R, the comfort of the RT and the riding position of the GS.

My read on that is that the RS provides the perfect blend of all 3. If you cannot afford 3 bikes to specialise in 3 different areas, buy an RS!

Another old guy pontificating about the demise of the sport-tourer.   Comparing the RS to the GS or RT is lazy.  Different bikes for different purposes and demographics.
