Removing wheel weights - 36654 - 07-22-2022 A question for you guys that change your own tires. How do you remove the old wheel weights without damaging the paint on the rims? Thanks RE: Removing wheel weights - Grumpy Goat - 07-22-2022 Depends on the wheel weights you have. What type of wheel weights do you have? I haven't seen anything different in years. RE: Removing wheel weights - Pyrrho - 07-22-2022 Heat gun, followed by scraping residue with a plastic blade, and finish off with rubbing alcohol. That's my approach for stick on weights. RE: Removing wheel weights - Grumpy Goat - 07-22-2022 (07-22-2022, 10:09 AM)36654 Wrote: Steel stick on weights. I haven't seen anything different in years. There are other attachment methods, e.g. my Yamaha uses clip-on weights. There are also spoke weights. RE: Removing wheel weights - MrVvrroomm - 07-22-2022 Tongue depressor and Goo Gone RE: Removing wheel weights - Duccrazydave - 07-23-2022 I also use a plastic trim tool to pry the weights off. Can get them at Harbor Freight, Amazon, etc. https://www.harborfreight.com/nylon-pry-bar-installer-kit-4-pc-63594.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=12169518939&campaignid=12169518939&utm_content=114845746057&adsetid=114845746057&product=63594&store=685&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuO6WBhDLARIsAIdeyDJvhRJHV33JSybixx_oo6TK4KHKGsbclLttbb_BmMY2xysg72t86gAaAtNlEALw_wcB RE: Removing wheel weights - Grumpy Goat - 07-23-2022 (07-23-2022, 04:28 PM)Duccrazydave Wrote: I also use a plastic trim tool to pry the weights off. So very useful for scraping stuff without marring metal surfaces. This set of tools take this to the next level. Thanks for pointing it out. But, I'm making a trip to HF for a set of Dave plastic pry bars........ RE: Removing wheel weights - Duccrazydave - 07-24-2022 And don't throw your old weights away. Just roll the adhesive off the back with your thumb, clean with alcohol and throw them in the toolbox for the next change. When they're called into action again use some 3M tape and let them spin around for another 6K miles You can usually find the tape at any of your local auto parts stores https://www.autozone.com/sealants-glues-adhesives-and-tape/body-molding-tape/p/3m-1-2in-molding-tape/517034_0_0 RE: Removing wheel weights - 36654 - 07-24-2022 (07-24-2022, 06:23 AM)Duccrazydave Wrote: And don't throw your old weights away. An economic/environmental dilemma, no? My method predates the ease of online ordering convenience. RE: Removing wheel weights - runnerhiker - 08-30-2022 I am having the opposite problem - the weights won't stay on the wheel. My R1250RS was hit from behind while being transported on my trailer, the impact damaged both wheels and the insurance paid for new wheels. My dealer made all the repairs, everything looked fine, but two of the three wheel weights used on both wheels have fallen off while the bike was parked!!! I have not had a chance to go back to the dealer to correct the problem. I have no idea what happened, the weights sure are sticky as I picked them up off the garage floor. Must be new wheels with a Teflon coating RE: Removing wheel weights - BobAin'tStoppin' - 08-31-2022 Must clean wheel with alcohol before attaching weights! I’d like to think that the techs would know that and be careful but they you can’t be sure who they assign to do these lower tech jobs in the shop. When it comes to balancing I now recheck that when I get home with the wheel after the dealer installs the tire and balances it for me. Balance is not always accurate and I have a video on my experience on that. |
