Extra Fuel - dravnx - 01-04-2023
I'm looking for ideas on how to mount 2X 1 lL fuel bottles on the bike. I have the BMW panniers and a Givi V47 top box on my 2018 R1200RS.
I'm doing a 10 day trip to Baja, Mx and there is one section of road that has 210 miles/338 km between gas which is at the very limit of my range.

If it were me I’d use a Desert Fox 3L bag and strap it to something. Much easier than figuring a way to mount 1L bottles. The Givi top box can carry a rack which would be perfect for carrying the fuel bag. Total cost $100 or $200 if you get the rack.

Never had the guts to try this el-cheapo, $20 option..., but let me know if you do. (You don't have to fill it all the way - but can in an emergency.)

I suppose that would be OK if it were thick enough and you were careful to store it where there is no risk of getting it punctured.

I've seen Giant Loop mentioned several times. Smallest size is 1 gallon.

If you already have a bag you can carry on the back seat the cheapest option is to carry a couple fuel bottles in the bag.

The bags are nice because they don't take up much room when not carrying fuel in them.

I ordered a Chinesium Rotopax knock off and I'll fabricate a mounting plate for the top of my Givi V47. Thanx for the ideas.

I mounted a Wunderlich rack (for tent poles and such) on the top of my small BMW case....
Have to say, in my youth, I enjoyed brazing metal tubes, but I found I enjoyed riding more.
Nothing like a luggage rack that was fabricated for easy mounting to your top case.
If you fabricate your own, send pictures, so we can ooh and ahh and vicariously enjoy the creative process.

You are welcome. Thanks for circling back and telling us what you ended up doing. I would be interested in seeing how you mount it on top of the top box, since I have the same top box. Maybe you could consider doing a DIY Article for the RSWb website ... let me know if interested in that. I would walk you through it.

I'll document the build and post it up. I won't start until I receive the fuel jug and because it's being shipped from China, that might be a few weeks.

My solution, quite a long time ago, was to buy a 2-gallon cheapo plastic gas can a bit before the long stretch and give it away when no longer needed.
Obviously this assumes you have available room. I strapped it onto a pannier.
Minimal cost, no construction required
