Recommendations needed for Hugger and Extender? - zei220 - 03-22-2023

Hello, I'm looking for experienced based recommendations for a rear hugger and a front fender extender, please. My bike is on order so I thought I would gather the few parts I need to make it perfect. TIA.

I have the MachineArt Moto "mudslinger" rear fender insert on my 1250 RS and the fit is very good and it does the job well. It's good quality just like everything I've gotten from MaMo.

Same.  I don't love the look of huggers.

Thank you for your comments, do you use anything on the front fender?

RE: Recommendations needed for Hugger and Extender? - Motorhead1977 - 03-24-2023

I don't have anything on the front fender. I had a "fenda extends" on my RT and it looked nice and worked well. I really haven't seen anything for the RS but also haven't been looking either.

I hadn't commented since you asked for experience-based recommendations, and I have no experience in either a hugger (on the RS) or a front fender extender (on any bike). I also was not sure what you had found prior to asking, and whether you already had huggers or extenders in mind.

Regarding fender extenders - I am not sure they are as popular as huggers, but there are a few alternatives out there.

A search includes offerings by MachineArt Moto but 5 minutes of additional searching did not bring up any models from that manufacturer that specifically applied to the RS.

Similar searches reveal options for rear huggers of which the Puig hugger appears to be most popular.

I have the Puig front fender extender and rear hugger, happy with both.

Chris 216, Thank you for your comment.

Grumpy Goat, Thank you for your comments and links to various products. I had searched via the interweb but had been unsuccessful in finding any real experienced-based recommendations for the Rs. My mind is open to whichever solution keeps me and the bike the cleanest. :-) It is beginning to look like the MachineArt products are the ones to go for, but I will keep the thread open for a little while longer.

I have a MaMo Mudsling on the rear and a Puig extender on the front of my 1250 and they seem to be doing the job fine. Both fit well and don't look out of place. I can't say how well they actually work as I fitted them before putting many miles on the bike.

After reading some reviews about the Puig extender causing issues I wasn't sure about it but I can't use the Wunderlich extender as I have a Roadlok fitted. I took the plunge and was careful with the fitment and it has been absolutely fine for around 5000 miles

The first year of the RS I saw several posts about this front fender extender rubbing but later years I read where people have tried it without any problems.
Puig is the only fender extender I like the looks of.
We had front fender extenders that looked like the Puig on our K1300Ss and they looked like a stock item to me.

When we bought our R1200RSs I did not get front fender extenders. The front of the engine will get dirty but the black finish is very durable and the surface still looked new when we traded the bikes 6 years latter. The front engine case finish is smooth and very easy to wipe or clean off.  If you're worried about the finish of engine case you don't need a extender. If you want to avoid dirt on the front engine case after riding through a puddle a extender will help.

On both or 2016 and 2022 RSs we used the MachineArt Moto Mudsling and at the back used a filler piece that used to be available from BMW dealers in the UK and Australia.

Good post Lee.

Lee - Thank you for your comment, it adds an interesting twist to the Mudsling option. I will enquire about the part availability.

I like that rear fender from the UK. I'm looking into it as well.

I had a member from the other RS forum buy one from his UK dealer and mail it to me.
2016 the cost of the part and the postage was not too bad.

I got the same part from a friend in the Netherlands, and it was about $60 US plus shipping.  This was done last year.

RE: Recommendations needed for Hugger and Extender? - Motorhead1977 - 03-27-2023

I just ordered the part from bmwclick. Shipping to the USA was steep but they appear to be the only place that says they actually have it in stock. I'll post up when (and if) it arrives.

RE: Recommendations needed for Hugger and Extender? - zei220 - 03-28-2023

Update.... I've bought a Mudsling and ordered the tailpiece. Just need the bike delivered now.

Thank you all for your comments and advice.

RE: Recommendations needed for Hugger and Extender? - Motorhead1977 - 03-28-2023

I received an email overnight and BMWclick said the tail piece is not in stock and would cancel the order. :-(

RE: Recommendations needed for Hugger and Extender? - zei220 - 03-28-2023

Fortunately for me, my son works for BMW and has ordered it direct from Germany. I'll let you know if they are out of stock there too.
