"What's new is the retro font that spells out BMW, and that the outer circle is no longer white but clear"

What do they mean the outer circle is no longer white.
I thought it's always been black, at least on motorcycles.

I too thought that was strange, having no recollection of white on a BMW roundel except for the 2 quadrants. Maybe someone with a BMW car can take a picture / confirm.

Looks like they misspoke.
The area that's changing to clear was always black.
Some years had a thin white border. The last 23 years the thin border has been silver.

If the outer circle is truly clear the roundel is going to look strange with all the different car and bike colors showing through.

Trying to remember, it seem like the thin border on our 1987 bikes were silver.
Can't remember on my 1984 R100RT because the roundel was not visible.
