Blue Ridge Parkway
#1
Took a nice afternoon/evening ride last Sunday (10-27). Uncharacteristically warm weather for October made it difficult to do just the usual 66/89 loop, so I headed up into VA to ride the Parkway for a bit. A little bit of sub 50mph cruising to contrast the prior backroad barnstorming :-). Pulled over at one of the overlooks for a pic and as I was about to pull out a guy came over to ask about the bike. Said he was tired of the extra weight of his 1200LT and wanted lighter “all-rounder”. I pitched the RS for all it’s worth. Maybe he’ll join the fold!
By the time I arrived home, it was getting dark and I had covered about 195 miles. [Image: 54dc37172188c11cfc4545b85e5b7821.jpg]

Thanks for the picture.
I'm surprised it's still that warm on the Parkway.
It's been cold here since we returned from Arkansas the 4th week of Oct.
Roads have already been salted.

Nice picture. The parkway is a beautiful road and in a very scenic part of the country.

A few years back my buddy Terry (RIP) and I got stopped on the parkway by a federal officer. He was a little (understatement) warm under the collar when he stopped us. He said he had been trying to catch us for ten miles. The funny thing was we had been running 65 for those ten miles. We initially saw him at a pull over out of his vehicle. We did not think too much about it at the time because he did not move toward his vehicle so once out of sight we resumed our prior pace. A few minutes later my Valentine Radar detector started to slowly beep indicating there was a radar source behind us. As he got closer to us it started to beep more frequently. We naturally slowed down and when he finally caught up to us we were going 45 mph. He pulled us over anyway and told us he was going to radio ahead to other police on the parkway. Terry and I got off at the next exit on what ended up to be a great road. We never road on the Parkway again.

This past Sunday I had a nice ride with a buddy on his KTM 1290 GT. South and west of the Chicago metro area there are a couple of decent roads. Unfortunately the weather has now turned colder and we have had snow on at least two days since last Sunday. The salt is on the streets and barring a nice rain and warmer temps my riding season is pretty much over.

The mileage speaks for a great day.

I'm with Olgry. I spend a lot of time trying to ride every bit of yellow ("gold") on the Butler maps and have done the entire BRP.... But once is enough. As you know better than I, there are so many good roads and towns with a view in the area, I cannot justify the risk of a closer relationship with Officer Friendly.

Safe travels.

One good thing, tickets from Federal Officers don't go on your record.

True about the roads around the BRP area. I typically only jump on the parkway at the junction of HWY 8, then take it down past Mabry Mill to 58 - Meadows of Dan. Then you can pick up Squirrel Spur, which is a wonderful twisty bit of tarmac. There's also a great road off of 8, before you get to the BRP, as well- Route 40 (starts in Woolwine) towards Rocky Mount. A great, scenic road with lots of curves and elevation changes that winds up at a gas stop and a Dairy Queen. Dang it! This is as bad as talking about food without being able to eat, now that the 200 lb squirrels are active againBig Grin
