Next Generation TFT

Here's a little info on the next BMW TFT display.

With this I'm guessing there will be no Navigator VII.

Maybe not but with the Navigator reputation for navigational accuracy, exorbitant price, screen heebie-jeebies on the Nav VI, even this "ho-hum" display should be better. Besides one less screen to look thereby freeing up more cockpit real estate.

That said, how this one works though is not too impressive to me:

"How does it work? You have to download the free smartphone app, tho connect via Bluetooth, and to set up the destination on the smartphone. The TFT Dash is taking over the information and shows you the guidance (it also features audio guidance). Of course, you can also listen to music and make calls.

For safety reasons, it probably won’t feature a touchscreen and will be controlled via the jog-wheel on the left handlebar. It also doesn’t seem to have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

It looks to me like an evolution of what they have at present where they’ve added a map to the existing TFTs capability to link with the “Ride Connected” app and give turn-by-turn navigation, and when you don’t have the map up you can have some of the “My Vehicle” type stats on the right hand side instead.

I find the nav slow and the touch-screen very unresponsive and with somewhat unreliable calibration and I personally find having to put the nav on the bike and take it off to just add to the faff of riding so having one less thing will be a win for me, but on the other hand I would understand people liking a separate navigator for if you want to go off grid etc. This also makes you more dependent on your phone staying charged up which is a small negative for me.

Overall I think it’s pretty nice but wouldn’t be enough to tip me over into getting the new model on its own.

I went to the BMW dealer in Fort Collins this afternoon and the salesman showed me this new TFT on the new RT. I was very impressed, I liked it very much, I think it will be a success. It was not a thorough show and tell, the dealership and the salesman were busy with prospective buyers.

There is a small compartment near the TFT to store the phone, it has wireless charging and ventilation so it doesn't overheat in hot weather. The BMW Motorrad app is required, it's free, and it works well. The screen is so large it easily shows the road map, directions, and the same screen info I see on the TFT on my 2020 RS. This is definitely the end of the GPS, the RT does not have provisions for installing a Nav VI.

I have a Nav VI and the TFT on my RS. I can use the wonder wheel for the TFT and the GPS, but I have to press a button 1, 2, or 3 times (depending on what screen is presently on my TFT) to switch between the two possibilities so then you can only use it on one or the other at one time. It is an inconvenience for which I cannot see a better solution. There is nothing I can think of that would say "BMW, you missed it, you should have done it this way......" Except that the new large TFT doesn't have this problem because there I no GPS! I really think they have a winner here.
