2020 - What are my options?
#1
Sorry I’ve been a little absent from this and other forums in general.

My R1200RS is bought and paid for since December and so I have the spare change to finally do some mods after buying some new gear which is long overdue.

So first port of call is finally getting rid of that horrible stock pipe that has bothered me since day one in all it’s shiny enormous glory.

I quite like the look and price of the Leo Vince pipes for the RS and wonder if anyone else is running one?

And what are potential other options in a similar price range?

Always wanted an Akrapovic and while I love the engineering the stupid price and the fact it’s the now boring default BMW option makes it a no go on this bike.

Being in South Africa it’s the only one I’d likely be able to get locally though, but also don’t mind importing as it’s not my first rodeo with bike parts across the world.

I recommend the exhaust I use / like - Remus Hexacone . It might not be that much cheaper than the Akrapovic and is more expensive than the Leo Vince, I am sure. Fine German company too. Big Grin

Remus also offer a slightly cheaper Black Hawk which also looks nice and probably sounds the same.

Lots of pops and crackles on downshifts, but your fuel economy will suffer a little - more air flow and that sound encourages more twisting of the wrist.

We missed you, but always assume folks who are absent are out riding.

Congratulations. First step toward enjoying a bike.

Do what you need to do, but think about what you really need to do to enjoy the bike.

Personally, I don't look back when riding, so the bulbous exhaust has never bothered me, and if the next buyer finds it desirable, I've saved a lot of money. Unless it affects performance, I don't think a lot about the exhaust pipe. (I mean, where's Freud when you need him.)

I tend to save my limited funds for tires, suspension, seats, levers, grips, pegs, other items that effect good fit and function..., and my next, more technologically advanced bike. As I get older, function becomes more important than the aesthetics of what I ride.

(Strikes me this is the kind of dad-like response you should expect when you ask this question of old guys. I think Grumpy's response is spot on for what you would like to do.)

At this point, I should recall that at your age, part of the function of a bike might be it's babe appeal and aesthetics while standing still.... Smile

Ride on.

While I do quite like the Remus the price to get them down here in Africa is astronomical to the point I suddenly no longer need the upgrade. ?

The GPR looks price favourable but they are all horrendous in looks and the fact there are so many makes me wonder if any engineering has gone into it.

Oddly enough I’ve had my fuel economy improve on every bike where I fitted aftermarket bits, except maybe my GSX-R600 but more for the case in those days I didn’t care to track such things.

But having a look around after this post it seems things are mostly the same still and nothing new has popped onto the market so I’ll likely get the Leo Vince off eBay and probably go for the Stainless Steel over the Carbon Fibre for a nice middle ground that doesn’t black out the bike too much.

To put it in perspective the Leo Vince will cost about $700 to get to my door.

Yeah it’s been a wild year between changing jobs, my old man passing away and Covid striking almost immediately after and all the various forums and things just took a bit of a back seat.

Yeah to be honest the looks haven’t bothered me enough otherwise it would have changed ages ago, but I never understood why it left the factory in chrome as an upgraded spec when there was a perfectly good unpolished option as standard which looks much better.

For me it’s a case of wanting to keep the bike for another five years and a bit of change in the noise and throttle response facilitates that “new” bike feeling. It’s something I’ve always liked to do at some point and also why I never buy a bike with factory fitted options for exhausts because I feel you miss out on that change and getting what you paid for and it’s not like they even rebate you.

Yeah that’s why I’ve left it until now where it doesn’t affect my pocket and comes out of what I’ve budgeted for the bike anyway. I’ve always overpaid the bike to offset interest and especially in this case as it was an emergency purchase of sorts when my Triumph shit the bed and popped the engine.

I did the Helibars right in the beginning for comfort as well as some grip buddies to compensate for the ridiculously thin stock BMW grips and might still do the seat for a bit more knee comfort at some point.

Probably the windscreen too.

I was in my 40’s already when I hit my early 20’s so it’s all good.

This time I won’t be going the full headers and air filters and fuel mapping route and stop at the slip-on only.

And buying an RS already cemented my dad life with a wife and two kids and requiring hard luggage instead of a back pack. Smile

That is the entire plan and reason for the effort to keep the riding going on without the urge to buy a new bike.

'nuf said.

Guess I knew from your previous posts on the fora that you probably have a more mature approach to riding than I. There's simply too much humor and philosophy around after market exhaust cannisters for me to pass up a late night response to an open-ended question.

Try to have a good year.

Cheers.

Pulled the trigger on the Leo Vince and even went carbon fibre as the deal made sense.

Now we hope it gets to Africa from Italy in one piece.

Wondering is SauRoN is still around and how the Leo Vince worked out? There was a time last October when BMW informed my dealer that the 2022 RSs would come with some sort of "Titanium" finish instead of the chrome, but they seem to have changed their minds and stuck with the latter, so I've put this Leo Vince on a very short list.

Anyone else had any experience with it?

Have determined via a number of YT Vids that LeoVince runs on the loud side, and talked myself out of the Arrow.

Ended up ordering the black aluminum Akrapovic (which I have now learned how to pronounce!) for the incoming RS. Maybe slightly louder at idle, but a nice, deep tone. Nice finish, with the C-F endcap.

I just paid $784 here in the US for a Remus Black Hawk muffler. I would like to follow that up with a Remus de-cat header system, but Remus wants $300 just to ship it here!! (not to mention that I would then need to re-flash the ECU, probably want to follow with a S2 Brentune, etc.....). Oh well, its only money-
