TFT color check
#1
While I can barely throw an online stick without hitting downloadable logos and artwork related to the GS, I can't find anything for the RS. I really, really like the startup TFT animations for the bikes, though. I've been working on recreating vectorized versions that can be easily resized and cut up for smartphone, computer, and GPS splash and desktop/background designs.

Since I can't just go somewhere easily and see an RS screen in person I've had to make best-guesses based on whatever stills and YouTube videos I've found online. Here's what I have so far. I found a RS TFT tutorial posted on YouTube that was pretty high quality, pulled a still frame from that, corrected for perspective distortion, and used a couple vector design programs to trace and hand-edit the shapes. How do the colors look? Too bright/dark? Is the "RS" really a slightly lighter shade of red than the fairing piece as it looks online? Looking for any feedback you can provide.

Once things are OK I'll start on some making some splash/desktop/background variations and share with the community. Thank you!

Is that horizontal line supposed to be there, or maybe it is a trace of the cursor during the drawing of the logo screen?

On my monitor your RS does not look red.
Maybe a faded orange?
Looks the same on my phone.

Agree. On my laptop it looks orange-peach. If it is supposed to look red then we need a photo from Ron.

I didn't realize the RS TFT had a start up screen like that.

This video shows it at the very beginning.

Here's what I get when I do a screen shot.

From watching videos of people starting up the bike, it appears that it's skipped if you start the bike immediately after pressing the power-on button in the center of the handlebars. I'm guessing that once you're used to the bike you either ignore it or skip it.

That's the video I grabbed my screen shot from, and used a color sampling tool from my editing app to match the colors. Due to technical factors of RGB color processing in digital cameras, red is frequently the hardest to accurately reproduce. Digitial sensors are most sensitive to red, so as to not have things look overly red there's filtering applied, which not only over-lowers red values to compensate but also alters everything else as well.

Here are some screenshots of other RRS splash screens I've found online. Some look more red than others, some have the blues blown out to the point where the darker blue tank, fairing rear, and wheel arc disappear. I don't suppose you could take some pics of your TFT with a phone or, even better, camera and post them here?

Unless a firmware update removed it the line is there as part of the color change between the dark blue field on the bottom of the screen and the lighter-blue to dark blue fade on the top. See linked images further up-thread. I'm not a fan of the line if viewing the graphic by itself, but am if I were to make a desktop image out of it -- especially for desktop layouts using Task Bars or Docks on the bottom of the screen.

Our RSs don't have a TFT display.

I'm sorry, that's right. But you have the Lupin, and I heard somewhere with that color anything is possible. Even a retrofit!

I'll try to take a picture tomorrow. Remembering this thread, when I started it today, the red on the letters RS are the same deep read as the horizontal ? (question mark) that outlines the gas tank, to the right of RS

The phone picture does not capture the red color correctly. There is no orange in it, it is pure, bright, red. After taking the pictures below, the actual TFT and the phone pictures' red color did not match. That why I also took a picture of the main screen where the tach red line shows, it is bright red in real life and orange/red in the picture. You are more likely to find a good picture of the std TFT display - the red bar in the tach is the same bright red as in the RS welcome screen.

That's helpful, thank you. If you're able to use a digital camera instead of a smartphone it would likely do a better job in handling the colors. Smartphones like your iPhone can do a very good job color matching things its AI recognizes, like faces, food, the sky, etc. A motorcycle's dashboard, not so much.

I see the image was saved using Apple's Wide Color Sharing profile but even here the reds are blown out and it's having problems with the "ABS PRO" lettering. Results would be better if you shot it in RAW format as that allows capture of the camera's full color range. Apple's built-in camera app doesn't support RAW but the physical camera inside does, and you can use free 3rd party apps like Adobe Lightroom CC to do it. How to actually use these apps is beyond the scope of what I'm asking but if you're into it, go for it and send me the RAW or Adobe DNG file.

Like I said upthread, red is the hardest color for digital cameras to capture. Ugh. I'll keep looking around for other pictures online of the dash in action and see what I get out of that. Thanks again.

Best quality photos I can find so far of the TFT are from BMW's own press site. I'd have used these earlier but didn't know about it until today. Using some photos of at least the RPM gauge / "main" TFT I think I've found a most-accurate red available online. Comparing that red to my original source red, I recorded the hue, saturation, and luminosity offsets and applied those to the corresponding secondary red, turquoise and blues in my last image.

This has dulled the turquoise & blue but hopefully is closer to accurate. The RS almost looks too vivid now, at least to my eye but again I don't have a physical TFT to compare it to. How's it look now, 1250 folk?
