MOT Number 5

NB - it’s a UK thing

My trusty steed walked through the annual test today as usual.

7 years on and 37K miles.

I’ve used the same local independent guy every time so he knows what to expect.

I suspect a lot of bike riders these days never get to see an MOT test as they just get a new bike instead Smile

We have annual inspection here also but nowhere as strict as in the UK. Essentially, they check lights, horn and brakes. That's it. Costs like US$7. What do they check in the UK?

In Mass. the bike inspection is $15. And over with very quickly. For cars the inspection is videod so the state can review it in case of a later accident. Costs $35.

No inspection here In Canada unless you are importing or rebuild after a write off. We do get hammered on insurance though.

Test cost £25

On top of the obvious lights and horn, chains and tyres, the tester looks for oil leaks from shocks and looseness in all wheel, fork and swing arm bearings.

Headlamp alignment is checked on a beam setting box of tricks.

Brakes are tested on a roller test machine.

My man (rightly) failed my son in law’s bike last year for perished tyre valves (old low miles bike).

A year or 2 ago the UK government outlawed all non-OEM headlamp bulbs on vehicles, but that was overturned almost immediately when they learned how many new and old vehicles have been modified with LED and HID lamps.

Alignment and wild glare remains important on headlamps.

The paper report shows date and ODO readings for 3 previous tests.

Anyone can access road tax and MOT status for any vehicle be entering registration number on Gov web page. Very useful when considering a purchase as all previous test dates are shown. Along with all the reasons if a vehicle fails a test.

I think that the UK's MOT system is good and enhances safety of both the motorcycles and of other people on the road. I was aware of the check of the headlight aim and glare.
