Just closing this one out. Wrote to the CEO of BMW Motorrad UK asking for a contribution towards the cost of my replacement unit. Reply from their customer services:
"[BMW] continuously innovates and strengthens the layers of security across our vehicle range, although we do not publicly disclose all these security measures because maintaining secrecy is crucial to staying ahead of criminals.
As this is not a manufacturing product defect, regrettably we cannot look to offer any financial support"
I cannot reconcile the statement that BMW is continuously improving security with their position that this fundamentally insecure product is not defective. Were the old analogue clocks this easy to steal? Don't think so, which suggests that no innovation and strenghtening of security in the design.
BMW declined to comment on my suggestion that they register stolen TFTs (easy enough to do) and ban dealers from touching a bike with a stolen unit installed as they keep security measures secret to "stay ahead of criminals".
