I am too often of the mindset that "instructions are for dummies" and go with what I can figure out on my own.

A long time ago I used to have that same mindset, until I discovered that I was a dummy and that I needed to read the instructions or risk wasting money and time. Now I read all instructions first, even if cursorily.
