Darrell might be the expert, but I'll suggest a premise - Motel costs on the 2-lanes run median costs that are 50% of those off the interstate.
For work, I'm a Marriott guy, but on the road I'm looking for the classic motels for a few hours rest. Recently stayed in Hermann, MO for $29 plus tax at a mom and pop (and daughter) operation - good lock, no mold, no bed bugs (I always check).
Just a thought.
