Bruce is right - some of my best mileage has occurred without luggage following Darrell at 10 mph over the speed limit and one gear higher than I would usually use. Of course, Mrvvrroomm is also one of the only riders good enough to get away with saying so.
Can you say 'sandbagging?" We know that behind the self-deprecation and well practiced group leadership, paced to the safety of the slowest rider, Darrell's a world class athlete and lifelong student of speed and bike handling. I mean, his veiled competitive side would probably still be happy to kick some of our asses time trialing on the track (at 28 miles/gal - to stay on theme for the thread...).
(And refresh my memory. How fast was he cruising on the two lane when he blew out the front end of his driveshaft? I believe he safely runs a little faster without others in tow.)
