I used to own a pest control company. Bait is the only way I would go. Contrac blox are the way to go. I live in the woods, 4 traps around the house and never have an issue.

The purpose of the balsam oil is to create an environment that repels the mice and rats. Sensitive little rodent noses don't like pungent smells that overwhelm their senses and don't allow them to smell at sufficient distance, food or my dog or cat.

Bait is good if I want the animal to come to me or my trap. I use balsam oil, pepermint oil, cinnamon, and the like when I want them to stay away from my machinery.

For what it's worth, I remember one experiment in which we used rat urine to study fear in mice.... All depends on what you want the bike to smell like when you start it up.
