For a variety of reasons, I chose the factory crash bars. BMW's parts fiche says they are not compatible with the RS's lower front engine fairings. A simple notch makes them compatible:

Very nice solution. In the case of the 2016 RS which I have, the solution was not so simple when I installed my (SW Motech) crash bars as the fairings on that bike were entirely different. Only solution was to remove them.

These are the Wunderlich bars along with the plastic engine fairing pieces to replace the shiny stainless steel:

I added a set of the Wunderlich sport crash bars to my '18 RS sport with the brushed metal lower engine fairing and those bars allow me to have both.
I keep trying to add a photo but it's not taking from my smart phone. I'll have to do it tomorrow when I'm on my big computer .
