Illegal turn signals
#1
I bought a used 2016 R1200RS years ago. Just a great bike (but you already knew that.) The owner had the smaller OEM LED (sport?) turn signals installed (see attached photo.) They no longer pass muster with the DOT (too small) here in the US, and I've just been living with a constant warning light on the instrument panel/Navigator V for years. I thought it was time to look into a remedy.

I'd rather not spend the money to replace them with new (legal) ones, I can't find used/salvaged ones, and I'm not worried about being stopped by the polizei. I've got a set of Clearwater lights up front that give me plenty of visibility. Have any of you been in the same boat and have any recommendations?

When we purchased our 2016 RSs new we had the dealer install the OEM LED turn signals that came on the bikes in Europe.
At that time BMW would let them reprogram the bike to allow the LED signals to work without giving a bulb out warning.
That's no longer a option for US dealers.
Where are you located?

My 2016 RS had the RG led turn signals when I purchased it. They use a resister in line with them and I do not have any bulb out warning. These are smaller than the original ones.

Thanks, guys. I'm in Northern Wisconsin. It's too cold and snowy to ride right now, so I've got time to fiddle with this. Any pointers as to the rating of the resistors, where they would be placed, series or parallel, etc.? I know just enough about electronics to be dangerous.

I just found this kit by Rizoma https://www.motovationusa.com/ee078h-tur...ute_values[2269]=169632 I'll let you know how it works. I don't know why my BMW service shop didn't offer this as a solution years ago. Thanks again for all your help!

Just realized this is just a connector kit. Rizoma makes a Turn Signal Resistor for CAN Bus but not for the R1200RS. Maybe this would allow me to dial in a resistor value that would work, but it looks like I'd need two of them though - Highsider CBW1 CAN-Bus Resistor - 207-033 I'm comfortable soldering in a resistor if I knew where to do it and what ohm value to use.
