Put new tires on my 2018 R1200RS last Tuesday. The next day I rode about 60 miles to make sure everything was OK as I was going to leave on a trip on Friday. Friday morning I pulled the bike out of the garage, started the bike and immediately got a red flashing warning and the rear tire TPMS indicated 23 psi. Found the nail, pulled it and plugged the hole with a worm. Grrrr, my luck.
Rode 70 miles to meet with some friends to start the trip. Monitored the pressure all good. Shut the bike down, hung around about 1/2 an hour. We all loaded up and hit the road. About 75 miles into the ride, the rear TPMS displayed dashes. I stopped, checked tire pressure and it was perfect. Continued the ride and the tire pressure would intermittently display correctly, show dashes or show dashes and pressure flashing.
Eventually, the rear TPMS displayed dashes and never displayed the correct pressure for the remainder of my 1700 mile trip. I checked the tire pressure every morning and it was always spot on at 42 psi.
What's weird is that on Friday morning, the TPMS displayed the low 23 psi and flashed the red indicator before moving the bike. I'm assuming this is a safety feature that prevents you from riding off with a very low tire but I can't find any mention of this in the owners manual. I'm assuming this also ran the battery down in the TPMS sensor. I replaced the sensor this past spring and it now has about 10k miles on it.

That is strange. Normally the tpm requires a certain speed and distance to wake it up.

That's my experience with the TPMS with my '18 RT and my '20 RS as wel, even when the pressure was low on start up. l

My '16RS displayed the warning and showed 21 psi on startup, after an 8 hour work day. I had picked up a wood screw in the rear tire pulling into the parking lot, at work. I also thought rotation was required.

Thanx, at least now I know that this is normal ops. Now to figure out why its not tranmitting. I try removing and reinstalling the sensor with the GS911 and see if that doesn't fix it. If not, I guess it's time for a new sensor.

If you bought it from BMW the parts warranty will replace it.
If aftermarket, buy from another supplier.

It's aftermarket. I don't remember where I bought it though. Probably Amazon. They only have 10k mi on them.

When the battery is weak the display will be intermittent.
I had one on the R1200RS start to go out on a trip. Some days it worked all day and some days it only worked part of the day.

Guess it's time for a new sensor.
