They are sending me one. For a little less than $300, I pulled the trigger.

We had a few warm days, recently and I decided to break out the RS, which has been ignored for the last few months. Surprise, my NavVI decided to finally join the ghosting club. Emailed Garmin and had a response within the same day. I’ll get shipping labels late March, as they’re out of stock right now.
One thing I noticed in the email that I don’t think I’ve seen in this (lengthy) thread is the replacement unit will have a capacitive glass touchscreen as opposed to the original resistive layered touchscreen, per their email description.
Guess I’ll find out in a month or so if this is an actual solution to the problem.

Dave, I guess this is your first failure / replacement?

I have had one replacement years ago and so far it has been holding up. At the time when I got mine there was no talk of a replacement screen type (capacitive vs resistive) and I suspect that mine may be the same type as before.

I have 2 Nav VI units.  One has the old style screen and other has the new screen.  New screen is super sensitive to touch and I find works best with a glove on.  I seldom attempt to enter anything on the new screen when moving as you get close to a number or letter it accepts.

Why 2 - found the new one still in the shipping box on Craigs List for $250.

Having traded in my RS, I now have the Nav6 mounted to my new XMax scooter.  Worked fine until the last ride, where it refused any and all touch input from the screen.  The map was jumping all around and of no use.  So the call to Garmin produced immediate offer of replacement.  The nice girl said they had found a component that was incompatible and causing this issue.  So that's a new explanation to my ear.  Anyway, new unit delivers tomorrow.  Very happy with the Garmin support on this unit.  Most vendors would have given up on it years ago.

I agree and that is why I have stuck with them The navigation is certainly not bulletproof but is still good, especially if one does not have cellular. It is because of this that I provide a mount for it on any bike that I own.

Good to hear that there might be a root cause of the screen issues. Of course when you get your new one we won't know if it is one if the "cured" units or not ... Dodgy

The Garmin Nav6 is working fine on my '22 RS. I have pretty much figured out how to use BaseCamp to make custom routes for my rides. This is my 4th Nav6, which was replaced by Garmin due to that ghosting problem. This Nav6 has been working fine for about two years or so (knock-knock on my wooden computer table).

A couple months after getting my GS, my '22 Ford Bronco Outer Banks mall crawler came in. I got it with the full-on avionics package, including the 12-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, etc. Hey - I really like that Apple CarPlay, especially the way it works with Google Maps! I can look up an address on Google Maps on my main 'puter, then find the route to get there. Then I can click on the "Send to your phone" link. Then, next time I start my Bronco, assuming I haven't forgotten my iPhone, my route comes up on the infotainment screen on my Bronco! How cool is that?

Now I'm seeing all these alternatives to the Garmin GPSs. These new devices fit the standard BMW nav cradle and work with the wunderwheel. They work with Apple CarPlay!

The main advantage I can see would be that it would work just like the Google Maps app in my Bronco. I don't have earphones in my helmet, so I don't talk on the phone or listen to music while riding. One downside would be that I couldn't create custom routes like I do with BaseCamp.

So are any of you guys using one of thse alternatives to the Garmin Nav6?

Which of the several units out there work best on your RS? I like my present Garmin Nav6, but I'd like to hear from folks who have made the switch.

Thank you

On my RS I have the Nav6 which, like yours, is still working well (knock on wood). However, I have hardly been riding the RS long distance lately so have been using Apple CarPlay in a 7" head unit. Used to be a Capuride, then I got another one from a different manufacturer that I found to be better so I use that now. I usually go long distance on the Tiger and find that the Apple CarPlay with Apple Maps / Google Maps / Waze / etc. is way better than the Nav 6 - provided you have cellular coverage. Best part of that is, I can use Apple Siri to talk to the phone through CarPlay and get route suggestions, restaurants along the route, etc.

I have not persisted with Basecamp and daresay I will not in future. I do have a better alternative (Furkot.com) which I have been using for a long time now and which I can use to plan my routes as well as my accommodations etc., and download same into the Nav 6 via GPX files (just as for Basecamp).

Calimoto is a popular app for suggested recreational rides - just put in start and eng and tell it what kind of ride you are looking for and it will suggest routes.

I guess I'm going back to the Nav 6. Currently using the Carpuride 7" unit for wonder wheel (702bs?). I just got back from a 3 week/3600 mile ride in Mexico. The mounting tabs on the Carpuride broke on day 3. I finally figured out that I could zip tie the unit to the mount. Of course that was the last week of the ride that my brain finally figured it out.

Broken mounting tabs and because the unit would occasionally disconnect at random (possibly caused by old school door openers). Only way to restart is to kill the bike, let the unit count down and turn off, and then restart the bike. Guess I'll carry a phone mount with me on big trips from now on. Belt and suspenders.

Well that sucks, especially since it broke on day 3 of a 3-week trip. Hope the trip itself was good and uneventful. I would love to do something like that after retiring. A CarPlay unit would be pretty useful on an adventure like that especially if it was mostly on-road touring.

Maybe you could share a small report and a few photos (?) in the Ride Reports section ... Wink

Yeah, when I used the Carpuride 702B it would occasionally lose the connection with the iPhone and I would pretty much have the cycle the power to the unit to reboot the connection, or something along those lines. I found it less reliable than the CPMC (Aocci) 7" unit I have been using since last October.

Hey GG. Are CPMC and Aoocci the same unit? Per your YouTube review, this brand seems to interface with the older tech quite well. Asking because of the buggy BT connection issues with the Carpuride 702BS.

Not the same unit - they offer different lines of CarPlay units but CPMC (CarPlay Motorcycle) is owned by Aoocci (see here). I am more pleased with my CPMC unit than I am with the Carpuride 702B which in turn was better for me than the Carpuride 702BS (sold on eBay).

Jimchoob (YouTube) has a $28.52 discount on some Aoocci models. You will have to look up "more" on the discriptions to find the size (5 or 7") of screen for a discount. I am not sure if his discounts encompass all sizes.
The only reason I have not jumped on this deal is that I want the GPS of the Garmin and not the cell network of Google.

After several emails back and forth, carpuride is sending me a new power base. I've had it awhile, so this is actually more than I expected.

That is good to hear. I have found that these Chinese companies seem to be fairly responsive to customer complaints and issues (especially coming from the West) and usually end up offering a replacement / fix. They are committed to growing the business and influence in the marketplace. I say this on my last working day this week, from Shanghai.  Big Grin
