There's a lot of places west of the Mississippi with high speed limits on 2 lane roads
Some areas you can make almost as good time on the 2 lane because of high speed limits and very few towns to slow you down.

Both of us were lucky to have a lot of vacation time, but we did have to cut down on the number of days on the road when we stopped camping and started to motel.
My biggest problem when working was most of our trips had to be early spring our late fall.
Most years I could not plan vacation during the construction season.

For me, when not camping, I need to minimize motel costs so, point A to point B is the way to go. Maybe when I retire.

Darrell might be the expert, but I'll suggest a premise - Motel costs on the 2-lanes run median costs that are 50% of those off the interstate.

For work, I'm a Marriott guy, but on the road I'm looking for the classic motels for a few hours rest. Recently stayed in Hermann, MO for $29 plus tax at a mom and pop (and daughter) operation - good lock, no mold, no bed bugs (I always check).

Oh I have seen some places here in Texas where the speed limits (in my opinion) are too high for the [back] roads they are on, and in those cases I ride slower - I ride what the road (and my capability) can handle. Sometimes that is slower than the limit and sometimes it is faster, although I tend to not exceed +10 mph.

These places with the imprudent speed limits often have houses either side with driveways leading directly to the roads. Its like the people who set the speed limits figure that those people matter less ...?

Thanks to Darrell I am a Best Western convert, but only when my wife is with me and I need to have good accommodations. When it is just me or me and the cheap riding buddies I also ride with, $40 is the rule of thumb. Sometimes it works out and sometimes you are a little nervous. Not only do you have to worry about the lock, mold and bedbugs, but you also have to worry about the "activities" outside throughout the night.

But $29 / night has to be a low record for somewhere that is decent.

From Ray's description she would be fine with it.
She camped for enough years that a roof and indoor plumbing is a luxury.
Old is not a problem as long as it's clean.

I've stayed there twice in 5 years while out on my bicycle.

Here's a listing I found today.

For what it's worth, I showed up in need of a shower, on a bicycle that doesn't look expensive, on a quiet week day and asked if they had a discount for old bicyclists. I want to say that with taxes, the total was $34 and change. I also stayed in the old single story block and not the new brick 2 story rooms - there might be a price difference.

Surprised at the listed price below, I went to my credit card account to check the amount and realized I also paid in cash....

In retrospect, not sure what I'd pay showing up on a shiny RS. I get the impression that the drunken weekend Harley riders that frequent Hermann might have a special surcharge at most of the local establishments.

I remember seeing that place and thought we would stay there a few years back but it was too hot to go further and ended up at the neat old route 66 motel in Cuba so it all worked out.
The Wagon Wheel in Cuba cost a lot more but at the time we just needed to get out of the heat.

I think it was 65. We rode 70 to 75.
Very good site forward and to the sides. No houses along the road or livestock.

Getting back to fuel mileage, I routinely ride the trip meter down close to zero (or even beyond) when I know where the stations are. Biggest fill-up was 4.889 gallons. I use the Road trip app which shows me with a lifetime average of 48.73 mpg. Note that for all of us these mileage figures are off by the error in the odometer. (Your gps just mirrors the dash numbers). So think perhaps 5% or so error.

GPS miles and bike miles on our bikes is always slightly different. I'm not talking about the bike's trip meters that show up on Nav, rather Nav's trip meters.

There's a difference. I doubt the bike's odometer is off by 5%.

As Bruce finds mine is different as well and over a couple thousand miles it is usually a difference of 1.2%.

Can anyone verify the odo over a hundred mile interstate ride? The mile markers are quite accurate over that distance.

Had a great weekend with my wife back on the bike in beautiful weather.
Riding as a tourist . . . but mileage on the R1250RS is great.

3,9 l/100km equals 60 miles / US gallon if I understand these strange units correctly :-)

That is indeed impressive. Even if my wife weighed 1 kg I would not get more than maybe 45 mpg.US in the bike's present configuration.

From the readout your average was 40 mph. No clue what I would get if I averaged 40 mph over 165 km (approx. 100 miles).
