New Tires Being Installed on the RS

That's in the ball park of what I got on the Roadsmart 3 and PR4.
On my Roadsmart I changed at 8,500 miles and had 3/32" thread depth front and back.

I may go with the Roadsmart 3 next spring.
If the prices stay the same as they are now and they continue the $60 rebate the Roadsmart 3 is only $190 a set.

Information provided Dunlop on Roadsmart IV at 8674 miles.

I’ve been changing the Roadsmart III tires every 8000 - 8500 miles and looks like I would change the Roadsmart IV at 9200 - 9700 miles so a gain of maybe 1200 miles based on this one set experience. I’ll give you a final update when I finally pull them off the bike and replace.

Huh - more than 9000 miles on a set of newly manufactured tires that saw their share of hot, new, twisty asphalt? Pretty impressive. And as you know, I followed behind enough miles to know that the rear doesn't even think about twitching coming out of the corners. (Of course, the rider doesn't twitch either.)

And the wear pattern still looks unbelievably consistent.

For now, current plan will be to wear out the Roadtecs this winter and try the Darrell-designed Dunlops (DDD) in the spring.

Meanwhile - Chris - we don't expect the measurements, but we'd love to have your impressions - especially in the context of whatever you end up doing with the suspension.

Only thing I can think of is that either the guys at the shop mentioned it to the rep or all things Dunlop are magically rectified if one whines about it in front of Darrell.

Went down and picked up the RS4s at the Yamaha dealership yesterday. Lo and behold when I got home the Nomar was waiting on my doorstep. Assembled it last night, but have to lag it to the floor today. Weather looks good for riding this weekend so I probably won't get tires changed until next week. Ray, I'll give a riding report on them after a few miles. I'm really interested to see what they will do for ride compliance. I have been holding off on any decisions on spring rates until I try these out.

Got the Nomar lagged down, seems pretty secure, can't wait to try it out, should be MUCH better than the Malcom Smith dirt bike stand and irons that I was using.

RevZilla now has the RoadSmart IV tires, for $385 for the pair, versus $250 for the RS III pair. If you go to the Dunlop Motorcycle Tires website and search by bike for the R1200RS, you get RoadSmart III or Sportmax Q3+. If you then choose Browse Tires from the menu and select RoadSmart IV, you get a big red message that says "These tires do not fit your bike, BMW R1200RS".
I think we need Darrell to contact Dunlop and find out what gives!

Thanks Micheal, I have informed my contacts at Dunlop about the RS and Roadsmart IV. On pricing I’m guessing if you shared with a Pro Dunlop dealer the on line price they would match that price and then you can submit for the $40 rebate or $60 if you have them mount.

Thanks for the links, Lee. Pretty sure Motosport was the first online presence to offer the IV’s.
Now that Revzilla is showing them, I’ll probably go that route.

Excellent. I have a few shops close by. When they're all open on Tuesday I'll start calling around for pricing. If they're close to internet pricing I'll be glad to support a local business.

Glad to hear your support of local businesses. It is easy to order on line and save a few bucks but how about the local small business shop we like to walk in to. When all our dealers are gone because riders don’t support them hopefully Amazon and Walmart motorcycle retrieval trucks will come to our homes to pick up our bikes and take them to some central service center we’ll never be allowed in to or even talk to a qualified service advisor or mechanic.

Interesting to note that the improved performance comes with sufficient price increase for them to keep the less expensive RS 3s in a "two-tier" marketing approach.

I had zero to do with this two-tier marketing approach but I’m happy to see they are willing to offer both the higher performance RS IV tire and continue to offer the original RS III version. I’ve used the RS IV over 9000 miles so far and still have some miles left on it. With the improved handling, additional mileage and costs associated with changing tires it will be interesting if riders just go with the lower priced tire and not consider the other factors.

For me the mileage does not seem to be much better than the Roadsmart 3 or PR4.
Most of the time we do not get to use the last 1,000 or 2,000 miles out of a tire because we don't ride locally.
I won't know about the handling until I try a set.
For our next set I may go with the Roadsmart 3 because it will save us $200 to $250.
I have not checked with the guy we buy tires from but I'm guessing $190 a set after rebate.
