What’s the general consensus regarding the official BMW panniers for the RS vs something like the Givi V37. I’m kind of liking the look of the Givi over the BMW but was wondering if there was an advantage to the Givi for the pillion in the shape of the case. Any info from those experienced with these cases would be appreciated. Also can the Givi hold a full face helmet?

I like the looks of the V37 bags but dislike the looks of the mounts.

Agreed Lee. It looks like there is some kind of quick release system for the racks though. If that was the case I could just put them on when mounting the cases for a trip. Most of the time I’d doubt I’d be riding with bags. Wish the BMW bags didn’t look so strange from the rear. They seem like they are more in the way of a pillion rider too.

I also have the factory mounting and would have to buy the Givi mounts to boot.

Did you consider the Shad options? Depending on discounts, the price can be as low as ~$550 with mounts. And, the mounts are less conspicuous than the Givi mounts.

Shad is a good option. Shad makes the BMW OEM bags.

I would have taken that option, but a former RS owner offered his old BMW bags for a slightly lower price.

I’ll have to take a look at those. They don’t look too bad and seem (?) Like they might have a better internal use with taking a full sized helmet. How’s the quality between the BMW / Shad / Givi? Both shad and Givi look a lot better to me.

As Lee said, Shad makes the BMW bags.
There's several Shad owners over on the R1200RS forum. They seem to be happy. Ask them.

Does the Shad cases physically lock to the mounting if I wanted to leave them on the bike ?

From the website, the operation is similar to the BMW bags. Two key positions. One opens the bag, the other opens the mount lock.
If it's of any value, the mounting system on the Shad SH36 and SH35 locks similar to that of the Oilhead bags.

I bought a set of Shad SH36's for my RS last year. I like them better than my old Givi's. The bag does lock to the mount, also you can lock the bag or leave it unlocked. Full disclosure, I haven't had many opportunities to use them due to Covid.
I just got another set with my XR, so I have a set I would part with. Shipping cost would probably be an issue. PM if interested.

Those two things right there would make it a more attractive option if I were in the market.
