2021 S1000XR Panniers
#1
I have not had my bike out for five weeks so I got it out yesterday for a ride and stopped at the BMW shop in Indianola Iowa.
They had a 2021 S1000XR with bags mounted. This is the first time I have seen the new style XR bags in person.
I like the idea of the small replaceable painted panel.

It was hard to get a good picture because the bike was close to the windows.
The black part of the lid has a thin gloss black stripe.

The 2021 F900XR has the same type of mount as the 2021 S1000XR so I'm guessing it also gets the new style bag. Internets shows the bags are 30 liters each.

A few things I noticed at the shop. They didn't have many BMWs on the floor and Five were the R1800.
This is a multi-brand shop and they only had a few Japanese bikes.
They usually have a lot of scooters but they had none yesterday.

They had a 2021 R1250RT on the centerstand and I noticed both the front and rear tires touched the floor.

I saw this on the website.
2021 BMW R 1250 RT Manhattan Metallic
THIS UNIT DOES NOT HAVE A RADIO OR TPM. THEY WILL NOT BE RETROFITTABLE ON THIS UNIT.

The last time I talked to the Kansas City shop and asked about TPMs.
He said lately the bikes have been arriving with TPM.
Earlier they had several arrive without TPM and the shop installed the TPM kit at their cost.
The kit was around $450 dealer cost for the TPMs and the unit under the seat.

I like the new XR panniers, and the shape is not fugly. I like the ones we have a bit better but the replaceable panel should be a cheaper fix for scuffs than replacing the whole pannier lid.

As for the centrestand on the 2021 RT - both tires on the ground is strange indeed. Must be something wrong or maybe it needs some sort of adjustment, otherwise it would be useless to me.

I do like the new RT and it is a viable candidate for "the final bike" but I'll not buy one without TPMS and although I don't have a bike with a radio, if it is "normally" offered with a radio I will want one on a bike of that cost, so that is another deal breaker for me at this time. Noting being retrofittable makes it even worse.

A set of lids for our bikes cost $720 so the small panels make sense. I like the accent better than a fully painted lid.
No TPM is also a deal breaker for me.
No radio would not matter as I've read the RT sounds system is crap and you can't hear the speakers at highway speeds.
I thought it odd Van Wall with not retrofit the TPM when Engles said they did it.

I have no interest in a RT. When I'm older I'll move to a smaller bike.

The mounting on the new XR bags is better, I think, like on the GS, you place the bags onto the mounting points and then you press a handle to secure them in place. It is less likely to drop a pannier while mounting or dismounting. Not a big deal, but these bikes are so good now, that small items make a difference.

When I watched or read info on the updated S1000XR it was mentioned the new mounts weigh less.

The RS is the first BMWs we have owned with painted bag lids so I've been very careful mounting or removing the bags Smile

When the R1300R and RS comes out in a few years I would not be surprised they use the new mounts and bags.
