Many many long times ago in the good old days no one would likely have been any the wiser. Darn gps and computers have taken so much fun out of life. LoL

In the Air Force in the early 70's, I was dispatched with my #2 crewman to Reno Nevada to de-arm one of our RF-4 aircraft (the recon version of the F-4 fighter/bomber). The flight crew developed "engine problems" coincidentally over Reno. The trip to Reno from Austin Texas took 3 days in an old piston engine cargo plane with many stops along the way. It took us about 10 minutes to de-arm the drop tanks and another 10 minutes for the aircraft mechanics to fix the "problem". Another 10 minutes to re-arm the drop tanks and the crew flew back to Austin. We had to stay in Reno that night and got blasted at the airman's club. Next day we were put on a commercial flight back to Austin. I have always been suspicious of the situation but never heard of anything happening to anyone. Different times for sure. Quite a memorable trip!

Similar events One legging it from NAS Sigonella to RAF Mildenhall. Always seemed to be over Southern France that we would have One issue or another finding ourselves making precautionary landings in Marseille. By the time we figured out the issue, We had busted crew day and had to spend the night. Always had a thing for Aix En Provence!

A pilot and I used to have to do test flights on a Coast Guard BO-105CBS after maintenance. Sometimes they were quite lengthy and took in hunting spots and dirt biking trails.

Sadly, when a crew takes one of these unauthorized maneuvers, someone up the chain has to take responsibility for allowing it to happen.
One of the best bosses I ever worked for was one of those senior responsible parties and paid the price. Sad.
I knocked, but the door was open.......
