Is the other RS Site Down?
#1
Is the RS site down?
I can't open it with my computer, tablet or phone.
Also tried two browsers.

Wayne is one of the moderators and thought he would know.

Small point of order, Lee ... this is "the RS site" ... Big Grin

Yes, it would seem that the other RS forum (www.r1200rsforum.com) is down at present. Wessie brought this to my attention earlier and I was able to confirm. Based on the error messages I saw, there appears to be an issue with the security certificate for the site, which often shows up around the same time that domain has expired. The following is what I see when I go to the site and ignore the warnings and continue. As far as I am aware only the Admin can resolve this.

Something similar happened to the original RS forum a few years back, which led to the founding of that forum and then the RSWasserboxer Forum Community (this one) very shortly after.

I noticed it was down at lunchtime UK time.

I messaged GG via this place and just read his reply. We are seeing the same error and I have no explanation. A Whois search shows the domain remains active until next month at least. The hosting site has had similar certification problems before so hopefully a short term thing rather than Holger ceasing to support the forum.

I see you same message as you two and my first thought was the certificate had run out. Good to hear the domain is still active.

I guess to avoid confusion I refer to this site as the Wasserboxer site or Grumpy's site.
If the person knows you, I say Wayne's site.

Reminded me again, why didn't Holger want to transfer ownership of the website?

I was not aware that was discussed. Websites cost money to run and domain names cost money to maintain. I would think that it is more a matter of who would want to take on the financial and other responsibility.

Holger has not responded to attempts to contact him, apart from when a member of the forum based in Germany tracked him down and spoke to him at his office. That was over a year ago. The website domain, and presumably the subscription to the forum platform was refreshed for a year shortly afterwards. I suspect the platform sub has now expired and the domain will expire next month.
Currently, the domain is still active on DNS but the redirect to the xobor.com forum platform host fails.

Since the moderators aren't Holger, what other manpower is needed to keep the website/forum functional? If the answer is very little or none, transferring the subscription to another person or group should be a simple change of credit card number. Any idea of the annual cost?

It appears Holger lost interest in the forum a year or two ago and has not contacted anyone about taking over. If Holger does not contact Wessie or Grumpy about taking over, the site is lost.
This happened to a forum I was a moderator on several years ago and even though there were four owners of the site, the main owner refused to turn over the key to the other owners and the site closed before any information could be saved.
A lot of technical information was lost. The forum also had a photo sharing site and all the photos I had stored there were lost.
As for the cost, it depends.
A friend of mine started up a new site when i-BMW closed and he said the cost was $300 to $400 a year.
If Holger does not turn the site over to another person, the site will close.

I have posted this on the UKGSer forum

Quote:It seems https://www.r1200rsforum.com/ is no more.

I had noticed the domain name registration expires on 7th May 2022 and the Admin/owner had not accessed the forum since Feb 2020. The DNS lookup still works but I am assuming the subscription to the German forum platform hosted by Xobor.com has not been renewed.

The Admin has not responded to attempts to contact him as there were some people interested in taking over ownership.

One of the moderators, GG, has had a US based forum for some time. Traffic is very light at the moment but I imagine this will increase as many members of RSforum are already registered there. http://rswasserboxer.com/R1200RSforum/

Cool ... thanks Wessie. I know about "RS Forum withdrawal symptoms" ever since the first one failed a few years back, so your pointer may be appreciated by most looking for a place to share RS experiences.

Yes, traffic may have been slower compared to the other forum due to size but the RS content ratio tends to be a little higher here, if you know what I mean. Wink And that is a good thing.

Cert expired AND the site is returning 404. So sad yet another repository of so much info will likely be lost with no archive.
