I also use paper maps and internet for planning. I like to have a general idea of a route and look up points of interest.
We keep our days short so we have time to stop and check things out.
If we make a reservation for a motel I use Google Maps to check out different motels and look for one that has a good restaurant within walking distance. We like to find locally owned places to eat. If the restaurant is a chain we'll pick one that we don't have in Iowa.
We avoid fast food.
