Final Drive Gear Oil
#1
so....as usual, got charged by Dealership $75 for a BMW branded 500ml (only ?!) bottle of their gear oil Hypoid G3 70W80

What are you guys using INSTEAD of this ripoff ??
For example- will a Motul or Mobil brand of Gear Oil 75W90 work ??

I can't seem to find another 70W80 weight....does that matter ??
What is "Hypoid" exactly ??

Thanks!!
Joe

https://bmwsupershop.com/products/r1200-...t-fdkr12lc 180cc is what is needed for a wet drain and fill. The kit comes with new gasket and o-ring. I do the final drive along with the oil change every time!

Weird that your link shows a bottle of 207cc....that doesn't jive with the 180cc ONLY needed to change the gear oil out ????

How so? I’d rather have more oil than less oil, and that bottle might be for different bikes.

The 207ml size bottle is for convenience when the Final Drive has been rebuilt and is an initial fill on an otherwise dry case, gears and bearings.
As stated, servicing drain and refill is 180ml leaving room for expansion when at operating temperature.

75 for 500 ml ? id they change it for you to ? the small bottle BMW branded is $13 dollars at my dealer . 3 bottles would be 621 ml at 39 bucks .
