Good Day!
Today was my first outing with my RS this season. Slightly cool but after a long cold Quebec winter it was a welcomed change and refreshing ride. What I noticed almost immediately on my ride was my Garmin was advising me that my maps needed updating. Quite funny since it was fine when I first started the bike. I then tried to reply "OK" and pressed the screen but my inputs were not working. Screen was frozen and the buttons were flashing. After opening and closing the gps several times I was convinced the unit had turned into a brick. I couldn't think of what else to try so I got on the garmin site and went thru their trouble shooting page. I read somewhere to check for updates which I then did and found my unit was due for the latest version. Lo-and-behold the update solved my problem
Just passing on my experience

Good to hear that the issue you had was it just needed an update and not the more serious ghosting issue. I added to the thread title to mitigate any confusion that might lead some to think that they can solve the ghosting issue by updating the Navigator.

I recently did a maps update and afterwards I started getting some odd screens while riding. I wasn't happy and looked to see if I could undo the maps update. When I was looking I saw that there was a software update and installed it. BINGO! No more odd screens while riding. Not that it's a cure for everything but "lesson learned...." I'll be checking for updates if I get anything out of the ordinary (except that ghosting thing) which so far hasn't happened.

If you have Garmin Express installed on your computer, you get notifications when software and map updates (2 separate things) are available.
The Garmin Express program loads at computer bootup and stays resident in the background, monitoring; sometimes I get notifications and sometimes I don't. If you want to check at any time (which I periodically do, especially before going on a trip using the GPS), just click the icon in the task tray in the RH side of the tool bar and you can see whether updates are available.
In my case below, the Garmin Express program itself needs update, which I just did. I am one of these people who always keep software updated, wherever it exists.
After updating I get the main window, which shows I need to update my 2 GPS units. Clicking on each tile I can see the details of what would be updated once the unit is connected.

Thanks for that update Wayne. I had checked a few weeks ago and saw no updates. So now I am doing three updates on the Nav and new map for Base camp. Took about 6 on off cycles to get the nav to open up in USB mode (and two cable selections), but is going good now.

I would call Garmin and speak to a CS representative. You never know ... maybe this is related to the screen issue and maybe they will replace the unit. Good luck and let us know how you made out.

GG,
Contacted them by phone and they already sent me a return label. Apparently they are backordered so I will have to wait till early May to receive my new unit.
Quite pleased with their reply

Yes, I have heard nothing but good things about their return policy when it comes to these Navigator units. At first they were sending new (?) units based on the same old screen design, but I believe that they have since updated the screen design such that the units they are now sending out are the updated ones. Hope that is why yours is delayed.
