Problems with Batteries on the RS?
#1
Hey all,

I'm about to have my fourth battery replacement on my 2020 RS. All OEM batteries. Bought the bike new, have 57k miles on it, and at the last service, Morton's BMW once again said it failed their test. A fellow local RS rider has had a similar experience.

Anyone else?

a search for battery on either forum will pull up plenty of similar experiences to keep you company.

We picked up on a bad computer board that was not turning off, before my delivery of an early 2016. I've encouraged anyone burning through batteries to have the dealership look carefully for a parasitic draw from a bad board. In spite of all the bad batteries, however, I seem to be the only one that identified a fixable issue.

Not me. I have only gone through a couple of batteries with my 10-year-old RS that has 62k+ miles on it. Never as the result of some dealer test, and always on an explainable failure to start leading to failure to accept/hold charge. Works well for me and not locked into OEM batteries and their prices. Four batteries is a lot.

Wow. The battery on my ‘18 RT went six years before I replaced it - and that was only because I didn’t want any “surprises”. I would ask Morton’s to look into it a little further - they’ve always been good to me about this sort of thing.

Original battery in my 19,000 miles 2020 RS. It does however live on a Battery Tender whenever the bike is parked in the garage.

Also, happened to think, not sure what the newer bikes have for a battery, but I recall there was a spacer on the 1200s that once removed, allowed a bigger battery. I too have not had problems after replacing the original battery.

Had a test done, they finally confirmed a parasitic draw (with only OEM stuff hooked up, so not my ezHex Can or myUSB). Just not sure where it is--so they'll take it in for a couple of days and trace it down (and have BMW pay for it). Will keep ya updated

Honestly, the dealer has been great--and the mechanic who works on mine is super-trusted. So they're actually coming to pick it up today (yes, pick it up for only $75--dealer is almost 50 miles away). Will keep everyone posted

Here's the result from Morton's:

Description: Battery replaced 0808/2025, found excessive idle current. Spec for non-DWA equipped K5x is 0.06mA, measured 2.73mA with all accessories disconnected. Ruled out various easily-accessible components and control units on 8/8, consider diag with IR camera to find which component is staying active.

Resolution: Initial diag concluded regulator faulty. This was disproven by subbing a known good regulator. Restarted diag with guidance of TSARA (4300953). Found draw was coming from Hex ezCAN. EzCan was pulling ground trhrough regulator. Known good ezCAN confirmed to have same draw. Advised customer to monitor battery voltage and charge battery if bike is unridden for longer than a week-or-so.

Please do. I have 2 CANBus controllers made by HEX / Denali. I do ride the Tiger (Hex ezCAN) daily and the RS (Denali CANSmart) is always on a trickle charger, but it is nevertheless good to know what they have to say about it. I wonder that the controllers are monitoring ... Huh

I have a Denali CANSmart running my 2 sets of Clearwater lights (Darla and Super Sevina) and can let the bike sit for 10 days to 2 weeks without any battery issues.

Are you able to power these HEX whatever via a power supply that is switched off when the bike is shut down?

I don't think so--that is, they need the power supply switch to be on before they do anything. Regardless, I'll let y'all know what Hex responds

The latest (on September 11, and I am writing on September 22) from the dealer:

" I just spoke to Mamie who has been in touch with BMW North America & BMW Germany about your bike. It is throwing the same fault code, so the bike thinks the engine is out of timing, but Mamie has confirmed to them with video that it is in time. They have had her order another intermediate shaft just in case the one that we replaced was defective. We are sorry for the delays, but she is on it. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a mystery to them at this time as well.”

So...like in Casablanca, we wait...and wait...and wait....

So glad, too, I bought a 2025 Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello Wind Tunnel Edition on August 23.
