Nav V wrong date
#1
I was out for a quick ride today and noticed the dashboard displaying the date as 04/23/2000. I know the RS is fast, but I didn't know it is fast enough to achieve time travel. I believe this requires exceeding the speed of light, or at least 88 mph.
I later figured out that my BMW Navigator V GPS thinks the date is April 23, 2000, and the bike is set to use the GPS date and time. On this page https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=d6...8Ca1Nigce5 it says:
"The GPS satellite system communicates the date via a week number that is limited to 1024 weeks (about 20 years). On November 3rd, 2019 the week numbers broadcast by the satellites will “rollover” to zero. If GPS receivers don’t account for this rollover in their software, it will calculate the wrong date and/or time."
Apparently the Nav IV and V software does not. The Contact Product Support link on that same page will take you to a page where you can log an email support request. You can ask them to let you know when the software update is available.

Boy I tell you, between the crap date issue with the Nav Vs and the demon-possessed Nav VIs, these Garmin products leave much to be desired. It is ONLY because of the jog wheel integration and the telemetry that they are still selling, meanwhile consumers are grumbling. The day that there is an alternative is the day the Navigators go to the grave. My cell phone with CoPilot already is a better GPS unit ...

I saw an article in some magazine recently about this thing. It looks pretty cool. If I didn't already have a Nav V, I'd probably buy this instead.

I’d like to add a technical visit or topic to each of our Ride-In’s going forward. In 2019 we took a nice tour of Ohlins and visited Wunderlich.

I have contacted the vendor to see if he would come over to Gunnison in September 2020 and do a demo for the attendees to our 2020 Ride-In. We have 14 RS owners signed up so far and I expect more as we get closer.

I’ll keep the forum updated on his response.

I've been very happy with Garmin products and have no plans to change brands.

Received a note back from the owner who is tentatively going to plan on coming to Gunnison to do a demo for us. I'l stay in touch with him and his partner and make arrangements with him for some late afternoon or evening demo.

Hi Darrell,

I would love to attend your event and give product demos, Gunnison is a beautiful area.
I'm going to tentatively say yes, and block out my calendar.

Let me know the specifics once it's all nailed down.

Thanks again for the invite
Keith

Someone on the other RS Forum mentioned that the update for the Nav V was released and that it fixed the date problem. Of course they did not put a link to any info. Might want to connect your Nav V and fire up Garmin Express to see if it finds anything.

According to the Updates and Downloads page "as of Dec.10, 2019" the latest version is v.3.50 and the changelog says:

Change History
Changes made from version 3.40 to 350:
Improved software stability.

No mention of any date issue, which makes me wonder if v.3.50 is the latest.

Noticed on the R1200RS forum where reports are starting to come in of a successful update from Garmin that clears up the Nav5 date issue

I am going to try the update on Garmin Express later today. Garmin excess indicates the update take 2+ hours. I will try it later today and report back.

It is usually pessimistic. I have never seen an update take more than an hour, and most often it is less. Just make sure the Navigator is [fully] charged and the computer is powered on throughout.

Someone on the other forum said that after his update nothing appeared to have changed but then after 4 km the date fixed itself. Maybe he only noticed the fix after 4 km on the bike and it may have updated after the first check with the satellite ...?

If/when it is fixed, I would like to know the software version that implemented the fix. No one is mentioning that, or the link on online information about the update. Maybe it is solely via Garmin Express, which given the back-assward way Garmin does things, won't surprise me.

You may need the latest maps.
I think the "improved software stability" update only takes a few minutes.
I had not done a update since the 2020.2 maps.
This morning it showed 2020.3 maps and 3 other updates.
I did both of ours this morning and it fixed the date.
With new maps it took 30 or 40 minutes.

You'll need to update to the lastest Garmin Express ver 6.19.3.0

We have three Nav V. The first took a bit over an hour with wired internet. The other two took less than 30 mins each.

Thanks to Darrell, I am advised that BMW Navigator software update version 3.50 is the one that corrected the date issue.

The link to the Garmin Support Page is here. The download is 72 MB and should only take minutes to install. As Bruce said, you'll need to update to the lastest Garmin Express ver 6.19.3.0.

Most of the time I don't do software updates between the 3 month map update.
When I do a map update I select all updates and don't bother to look at the software updates.
This time I looked at the software updates and figured " Improved Software Stability" was the date fix.
