It’s the small things

I’m sure this isn’t such a big thing with the darker (Darth Vader) color schemes and others who can ignore it, but the gap between the tank/seat junction drives me crazy. I’ve noticed it’s not like this on all RS’s. Nonetheless, in my quest to disguise the obvious, I decided to paint the panels in that area with some trim paint that was on the shelf.
Now that the white paint isn’t in that area, my eye is not drawn to it as much.
Please tell me that others in this ever expanding community can relate...or I’ll just join a support group :-)

Dave, you and I both have this issue. As a matter of fact I was prepared to get the sport seat just so that it closes the gap. I mentioned as much to Darrell before. I installed the Cool Covers seat cover and its thickness serves to close the gap to where I am not bugged anymore.

Hmmmm ... you might be right. In the Wunderlich HQ parking lot when we all visited Hendersonville, I tried Darrell's Sport Seat on my bike and the gap was closed. Maybe your tank fairings are mounted a little higher, which is weird given that these bikes are mass-produced.

In Colorado I was chatting with Dave about our OEM sport seats and how they appeared to feel softer then we’d like and maybe the foam was breaking down. I’ve rode 10,000 miles with the tall Wunderlich seat and the firmness and flat surface just felt right. I knew I would never use my OEM sport seat again unless I did something to remove the center crown as Dave did and find a firmer foam. I spent some time with an upholstery shop in my local area that rebuilds all kinds of seats and installs car interiors. I explained everything I wanted done. Crown removed, OEM seat cover reused, a very firm foam replacing 1.5” layer of current foam, a smoothing foam layer over the whole seat and a bit taller if possible. He accomplished all of my wants. I’ve only used it 40 miles but it sits very firm, a little higher and fits the bike perfectly.[attachment=980]

Nice Darrell. The smoothing foam is something I still have to do. As for the reshaping, it's been perfect for me. And I reduced the tank/seat gap further by shimming the front seat mount bracket up by 4mm.

Take one of your seat to a local shop that does car interior work or seat foam work and ask them to remove 1.5" of foam from your seat and replace with a very dense almost board solid foam, shape as you want it and then over the whole seat with a ⅜" thick very soft foam to give the nice finished look. Even ending up with the same height it will sit higher as you won't settle in the seat as you do now.

Certainly my ‘16 RS has less seat time than either of you “road dogs”, lol. With my weight and nonexistent butt, the padding feels just about perfect

Had the bike out today to check out the new windscreen (used Aeroflow medium sport from Sierra BMW) and my neck. Was reminded that all my time on bicycle seats makes me a really poor judge of foam quality, quantity, etc. I'm pleased to be able to sit out this discussion (pun intended) other than to note that stock seat technology's cone a long way since rhe days I thought a custim Corbin was mandatory for anyone doing more than 30,000 mi/y.

It still surprises me that I can sit on a skinny and hard bicycle seat most of the day and be comfortable.

Heheh. Thanks. All felt good until I tried tp take off the helmet.... Didn't have to pull the liner, but it was a bit of a surprise.

(Did you know that as of Aug 20, Missourah no longer requires helmets? )

( Bike is a year older but my insurance went up by 20%.)

All that said, the whole purpose of an off-season is gentle activity and rehab - should be in great shape by March.

Good news about the recovery, Ray. If it's fitted correctly, I can certainly understand the helmet removal being the most stressful part of that process.

Sounds like there needs to be an experiment: Either mount the RS seat to the bicycle or mount pedals to the RS to eliminate the constant leg motion as a factor

I just love that attention to details. But it is much easier to have a full Black R1250RS . . . . then all gaps are black :-)
