A question for you guys that change your own tires. How do you remove the old wheel weights without damaging the paint on the rims?

Steel stick on weights. I haven't seen anything different in years.

Heat gun, followed by scraping residue with a plastic blade, and finish off with rubbing alcohol.

There are other attachment methods, e.g. my Yamaha uses clip-on weights. There are also spoke weights.

I also use a plastic trim tool to pry the weights off. Can get them at Harbor Freight, Amazon, etc.

I should buy one of these sets. Then I can throw out one of my favourite tools, an old plastic disposable knife. So very useful for scraping stuff without marring metal surfaces. This set of tools take this to the next level. Thanks for pointing it out.

And don't throw your old weights away. Just roll the adhesive off the back with your thumb, clean with alcohol and throw them in the toolbox for the next change. When they're called into action again use some 3M tape and let them spin around for another 6K miles You can usually find the tape at any of your local auto parts stores

I am having the opposite problem - the weights won't stay on the wheel.
My R1250RS was hit from behind while being transported on my trailer, the impact damaged both wheels and the insurance paid for new wheels. My dealer made all the repairs, everything looked fine, but two of the three wheel weights used on both wheels have fallen off while the bike was parked!!!
I have not had a chance to go back to the dealer to correct the problem. I have no idea what happened, the weights sure are sticky as I picked them up off the garage floor.
Must be new wheels with a Teflon coating

I’d like to think that the techs would know that and be careful but they you can’t be sure who they assign to do these lower tech jobs in the shop. When it comes to balancing I now recheck that when I get home with the wheel after the dealer installs the tire and balances it for me. Balance is not always accurate and I have a video on my experience on that.
