The Bed Bath & Beyond "anchor" store at the strip mall has been replaced by a Harbor Freight.
The future isn't retail......

There are many, many, many empty store fronts and even empty strip malls around these days.

There's one on the east side of Pittsburgh called Pittsburgh Mills. I think a Church and a Dick's Sporting Goods are the only remaining large tenants. The mall was built and folded within less than 20-yrs.
Interesting side story, Dick's sporting goods actually looks for declining malls. They only sign leases that base the rent on Mall occupancy. Fewer occupants, lower rent.
But, back to the local transformation of a Bed, Bath and Beyond to a Harbor Freight, I felt like I should light a scented candle and sprinkle potpourri...........

HF probably sells those too ...
I like Bed Bath and Beyond, when I am in the market for the sort of stuff they sell, which is not often. Not even my wife goes in there. She typically shops Walmart, Target, Sam's, Costco or online. That is what BBB has to compete with ...

BB&B has better quality stuff.
We don't shop at Costco and Sam's because they're too far away to make it worth paying a membership fee. We're also not fans of paying a fee to get a cheaper price.
We don't shop Target mainly because of the distance.
BB&B is not close but we'll go every 3 or 4 years when we're looking for a certain item.

I guess their quality could be better depending on what you're after. In my case all of these stores are less than 5 miles from my house. The way we shop I'd rather be living farther away like you do.

There's just nothing like the scent of an old Harbor Freight store ..... "Eau de Cheap Plastique". Years of off-gassing plastics leaves a mark, just like the grease and oil in the mechanic's pit of an old garage.

Hehe …. HF also has the machinery smell … just wander over towards the back of the store where they have their machines, compressors, floor jacks etc.

It's very rare for us needing to leave town to shop for a certain item.

That's another store I have never been in and I don't remember ever seeing one.
If I saw one I'm not sure I would go in.
I would have a hard time buying a cheap tool
I will make the exemption for a one time use tool.
Debbie has warned me in the past. It costs more to buy a cheap tool, dislike it and then go out and buy the tool you should have in the first place.
When she used to sew for a living she never bought any cheap tools or machines.

If it's a simple tool like a wrench, socket or c-clamp. I'll check-out the offering at HF. I might buy the $19 battery load tester to check the old battery from my RS.
But, typically, I'm pretty leery of the HF offerings. However, I do have an HVLP sprayer for woodworking that came from HF and a lot of woodworkers really like the unit. A more upscale retailer used to sell a similar-looking unit for about 50% more.
An even more expensive source was eBay where the unit was being sold as a spray-on tan applicator..................
So, whenever I get tired of woodworking, I'm prepared for a new career.......

If its a tool that will see repeated / good use over the years I would not buy from HF as their tool steel is junk. If it is a tool that may be a one off use then I would consider it. That said I have a great air compressor from them and their low-tech material indifferent tools like floor jacks are absolutely fine.
I'll not spend big bucks on tools I will under-use just because it is a [perceived] good name. For me it is always value for money.

Have you heard any of the Quiet / Low Noise oil-free compressors operate? It's a thing of beauty. What used to be a screaming banshee is now a hum with a mild chuga-chuga.

That would be nice indeed. Mine is a bit noisy but not noisy enough to open my wallet ...

When you mentioned that before I put it in my Amazon Wish List.
When my current compressor quits I plan to buy one.

I do have to warn you...........once your garage (i.e., man cave) becomes less offensive (noisy, smelly, etc.....), others in your household find uses for that space..
