Early in June, Richmond can be liveable. The typical mid-July date would have been a killer............Bloomsburg with Humidity

The location was not on my wish list
Every couple years we meet some other riders in Buchanan, Virginia. If the Buchanan rally is at the normal time of the first week of June we may go to both.

I'm sure it will be a great facility, but ....... it's really just an extension of the Washington Beltway these days. Such is the reality of living in an area with economic growth.

When they decided to move the date earlier, I think you'll find the location will move progressively further south.

Would have to be pretty darned early to move to Texas, especially the southern part.

There was at least one (Frankfort?) held in July

Fredericksburg Texas the last week of June 1997. The temps were good during the rally but nasty storms a couple days before the rally. I think it was something like 13 inches in two days. I think the storms before the rally scared people off and the turn out was not very good. That was the first time the rally was held during the week.
After the low turn out the board was afraid to try another mid week rally.

When I told Debbie the 2023 location she was lukewarm about going because of the location and the high population.
The one thing that may get her interested is the history in the area.
One trip in the 80s we were returning from Florida and since it was March we had planned a southern route home.
The weather was staying good and we changed our plan and went north before turning west.
We visited Monticello, Mount Vernon, Washington D.C. and Gettysburg.
She enjoys seeing places like that.
It helped that we took the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.

Much like PA, VA's population density drops rapidly as you go west. A visit to Monticello or Gettysburg would be OK at that time. Visiting DC or Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown will be fighting a lot of traffic.

For example, here's a day ride from the rally site that goes to some places you might not normally visit: - Central Point, the gravestones of Mildred & Richard Loving
- A nice curvy ride through Newtown on SR 721 to SR 14 through St. Stephens Church, Shacklefords, and Gloucester
- Yorktown (town, Yorktown Pub for lunch, Yorktown battlefield)
- Colonial Parkway (like the Blue Ridge Parkway, only with water instead of mountains)
- Jamestown
- Jamestown-Surry ferry (a free automotive ferry)
- Route 10
- Battlefields of Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor, and Gaines Mill
- Hanover Courthouse
Five and a half hours of riding--so a nice day of it.

Little traffic except for the Gloucester-to-Yorktown stretch (and a toll bridge between them)

Here's another nice day ride from Meadow Farm: - Ride by the North Anna Battlefield (Overland Campaign)
- Visit Patrick Henry's Scotchtown
- Back roads to Scottsville, VA, for lunch (multiple options)
- Visit the Earl Hamner "Waltons'" Museum
- Ride past New Canton and Carter G. Woodson's birthplace (memorial--no extant building)
- Ride one of my fav roads
- Head back to camp or visit RVA

I'm sure y'all saw this, but if you're coming to the MOA from parts north, Bob's BMW in MD has camping and fun other stuff going on.

Many thanks for your contributions to my already too full, dance card. Always good to have to pick and choose from a big list of good routes.
