Keyless Ride fuel cap release failed today

(05-30-2023, 09:00 PM)Ray Wrote: Another recommendation was to simple saw or clip off the locking block on the cap. The cap will still lip shut, but the locking mechanism is disabled. If the bike is out of warranty and the electronics foul up (what are the chances...?), then this seems reasonable.

Next time in the shop ask them if it matters that the shorten block will no longer touch the tiny pin in the plunger.
I have no idea what the little vertical pin does.

In my over 50 years of riding I never had anyone mess with a fuel tank. Even on the really old school bikes I had with non locking gas caps.

A couple years ago I ordered a SSR Billet cap to replace Debbie's keyless cap but I returned it.
The drain holes were very tiny.
The threads were very small.
There was not much of a lip to grab when spinning the cap on or off.
When Debbie held the cap in her hands she had a hard time opening or closing the cap.

Pictures start at post #27.

Well, I just looked at Pirate's Lair and it indicates those billet caps are discontinued as of 7/12/22. Phooey.

Let me put a tank bag ring on it, never work again. I'm two for two, and I don't care that it doesn't lock.

Are you saying the gas cap on your new bike doesn't work?
It doesn't lock, or it doesn't open??

Rumor (from Jerry at PL) is that Oberon is working on a replacement for late-model keyless gas caps and will release it later this year.

Does anyone know what happens if you unplug the keyless cap from the bike?  Is it locked or unlocked?  Does it throw a code?

I'm sure it would throw a code which is not a big deal.
No idea if the cap would lock or unlock.
I'm only guessing it would be locked because the plunger will not move and will hold the locking block that Ray mentioned.

In my case it throws a soft code that shows on the gs 911, but nothing on the tft.

Might try tightening the cap bolts, seems to "work" for me.

As an aside here. When I stop for gas I use the kill switch, leaving the ignition on. The gas cap works normally and I would expect that your bluetooth stuff would stay connected. Just a thought for you music lovers.

So Bob you leave the ignition on while filling?  I need to try that on the RT as it might just keep activated the XM radio (on bike) wifi (from bike) and Navigation (operating from iPhone) vs having to reactivate often after each stop when it is stop and go like a gas fill.

On my 2020, the gas cap won't unlock until the ignition is turned off.  Stopping the motor with the kill switch isn't enough to unlock the cap.

That would be the same for my early 2015 build.... If I don't turn off the ignition, the cap stays locked.

Adds more fuel to the image of demons in the gas cap. Unexplained inconsistencies.

Same with my 2020. Unless the ignition is off the gas cap will not unlock (when all is as it should be LOL).

Weird. I just learned this recently, but when motor is stopped by the kill switch I definitely can open the gas cap.

So - with the OK from my physical therapist and physical medicine specialists, was packing today for the trip southeast (slingshot by way of Eminence, MO, of course) packing the bike. Started playing with the gas cap. Still only unlocking intermittently.

  1. Locking mechanism looked clean as a whistle - but blown out with the filtered compressed air and re-lubed anyway. No effect.
  2. Potential interfernce from the phone was removed without effect.
  3. Turning off and on does not consistently work.
  4. Will still (though now inconsistently) open after all the boards shut off a couple minutes after turning off the ingnition.
  5. (Killing with the kickstand and leaving on - no luck)

So after 43 seconds with Dremel against soft alloy, I now have a latching, but not locking, gas cap and no fears of taking away from riding time to fix this on the road.
