Location in the world is now required for new users
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 01-10-2019, 12:23 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (12)

Starting today (5 minutes ago) any new sign-ups will be required to put their location before the sign-up is complete. This requirement is not retroactive.

Knowing where everyone is from is nice to know especially when it cannot be inferred from the post. Sometimes that is all that is needed to make the posts make sense.

State / Province / whatever and Country is suggested. Country alone is fine. You can add City if you like, but actual street address is totally unnecessary.

Existing users - Please consider taking a moment to visit your profiles and update your location.

Smile

Thanks.

No access to Facebook and YouTube for a week
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 10-06-2018, 03:04 AM - Forum: Announcements - No Replies

I will not be able to update the RSWasserboxer Facebook page or my YouTube channel until after next Saturday. I am presently in China and these sites (among others) are blocked.

  Spammers
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 09-28-2018, 12:50 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (1)

Seems that all of a sudden the spammers are active. As soon as I am getting the reports I am banning them and deleting the posts. This keeps up I will have to tighten up on the signups.

Thanks for the help reporting them, guys.

  Website updates
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 07-05-2018, 10:29 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (5)

I have been working a lot on the RSWasserboxer website lately, especially since I have a few days off this week (although I am going RV camping starting tomorrow).

The structure is well progressed, and I even have a few posts from the old R1200RSForums.com attached and hence preserved for posterity before they disappear. (Read more here about how you can help retrieve the best posts).

This is a LOT of work setting it up (but I knew this going in) and the level of work should fall off as it grows over time.

Attached are a couple of teaser screenshots of the main page - desktop and phone displays (subject to change). Smile

RSWasserboxer Forum Community is now on Tapatalk
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 06-29-2018, 05:43 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (2)

I have just set up RSWasserboxer Forum Community on Tapatalk.

Now you can access the RSWb Forums on your mobile phone - read and post in a mobile-friendly format designed specifically for phones.

You will need to install Tapatalk on your phone, and then log in to the application. Once you are in the application, you then search for "RSWasserboxer" and once found, you again set it up by logging in to the Forums, this time using the same username and password you use to log into the Forum Community on your computer.

  Searching the Forum
Posted by: SauRoN - 06-29-2018, 03:38 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (1)

Just to highlight a point on Rule No. 2 Grumpy posted here...

http://rswasserboxer.com/R1200RSforum/thread-1.html

vBulletin search is generally quite useless and I made this thread to avoid a lot of people saying they did search but found nothing.

A better way to search is to use Google and do the following...

site://rswasserboxer.com search term

Will work in most browsers directly in the address bar if you use Google as the default search otherwise just use it in Google.com.

Information Tip: Quick Reply vs Full Reply
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 06-24-2018, 11:22 AM - Forum: Announcements - No Replies

In many cases a quick reply is all you need, and the box is right there at the bottom of the page.

But suppose you are in the middle of a Quick Reply and you need to insert a hyperlink or do something else that the Full Editor would have allowed you to do? How do you switch to the Full Editor without starting over?

Just click Preview Post to look at what you have so far and the preview page will have not only the preview of how your post would look, but will also have what you did so far in the Full Editor on the same page. Cool

Information Editing photos for upload to online sites and forums
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 06-22-2018, 04:45 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (20)

Many times it is useful to attach a photo or two to a post, and there are two ways to do this - (1) linking to a photo that is hosted on a photo sharing website or (2) uploading a photo from your own computer.

In either case it is better to link or upload smaller photos since the page will load faster and download costs are kept down. If the photo stored on a photo sharing site is large it can be downloaded, edited and then attached to the post to make the post look better and avoid the dreaded side to side scrolling. If it is on your computer no need to download so you save one step!

This attached article addresses photo file size, giving some background information and then it goes on to describe how this can be done with any competent photo editing program. Please have a read, and consider saving for further reference.

Change to the US regional Forums
Posted by: Grumpy Goat - 06-19-2018, 05:37 PM - Forum: Announcements - No Replies

Based on an excellent suggestion from Darrell to align the US regional Forums with the BMW MOA (Motorrad Owners of America), I have changed these to:

This also makes any event alignment with the annual MOA rallies easier.
