I also use paper maps and internet for planning. I like to have a general idea of a route and look up points of interest.
We keep our days short so we have time to stop and check things out.

If we make a reservation for a motel I use Google Maps to check out different motels and look for one that has a good restaurant within walking distance. We like to find locally owned places to eat. If the restaurant is a chain we'll pick one that we don't have in Iowa.
We avoid fast food.

Agree on the outdoor "bathrooms" (as long as I am not seen from the road) and the other stuff is a great strategy. I like the bit about restaurants that are unfamiliar to where you live.

Well 3 days ago my 2nd Nav VI acted up doing its own thing by moving around to various screens. Did this for 60 miles while I rode home. Called Garmin for help. They verified the GPS I had was from the new batch that should have resolved this. I assumed they would just send me another new one but they spent time with me going over everything on my GPS to see if they could determine why it maybe failed. First we checked all the software after reloading the last version of Garmin Express on my MacBook Pro. Then they decided to remove all my maps and have me reload new maps. After mentioning I also had a Nav V with no issues they had me remove the Nav VI connection from the computer and attach the Nav V. We checked this software and then loaded new maps on this unit. Then back to the Nav VI and reloaded all the maps. I’ve rode 500 miles in the past 3 days and the Nav VI has worked perfectly. If I understood the tech correctly the updates for software and maps we do only add to the current files on the GPS computer and by re-installing the maps it clears everything and reloads new maps in a logical pattern. I know noting about electronics on this stuff but I do know I reboot my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro monthly at the suggestion of Apple technicians. I do have a specific number to call if it gives me trouble again as they will replace if it does. I have checked my Nav V on the bike and it works so I’ll carry that as a spare when traveling at least for the time being.

Just a follow up to my post on the Nav VI after Garmin worked with me to verify all the software and to remove not just update maps and reload new maps. In 2000 miles in some varying weather conditions I have experienced no problems, so far. I’ll keep you updated.

Watching this thread, because today my NavVI started going into "map browse" mode (what it does when you tap it to move around). Basically, without touching the unit or going into NAV mode on the TFT, it went into that browse mode. It was also twitchy--like it'd gotten ahold of some bad crank. Too, Sunday it wouldn't refresh to follow me for about 20 miles...and then it just, did.

Maybe just removing & reinstalling maps might be the ticket?

Since Garmin walked me through the process of verifying the software and then uninstalling the maps before reinstalling I have used it 7000 miles in temps from 107 to 28 degrees with no problems. I suggest you call Garmin to determine if you have a serial number in the batch that had issues and they are replacing or if you have a unit from the new batch of units at which time they will likely walk you through a process to see if it can be corrected. Have some free time when you call as it will take some time from start to finish if they want to replace the maps.

I suspect that is the best option at this point, based on Darrell's experience. It does sound like your Nav VI is getting the heebie-jeebies (as I call it).

The first thing Garmin is going to ask is if your GPS has the most current updates. Go to Garmin Express and check, might save you an additional call.

Getting home from Colorado, my Nav 6 works properly. I had the entire trip loaded in from Base Camp with each day a separate file. I did have one thing on the way home. When the low fuel light comes on the gas icon comes up on the nav screen. Touch that and search for gas stations on my route. I pick one about 20 miles ahead and add it to the route. But the nav put the station at the end of the route instead of the next thing. So my arrival time went to midnight and the gas station was 500 miles away! Now, I was driving at the time and so didn't get to really study what or why this was going on. Did I push a wrong button? No idea, so I just got to a gas station the old fashioned way. This isn't a problem on the main highways, but could become on in the back country. Any comments?

Bob - just after it says add to the route and you click yes, it displays all the previous waypoints greyed out and the new ones (e.g. gas station and Home) as active (not greyed out). In my case the intermediate one is placed before the last one (if there are no other waypoints) so I just need to accept. I suppose if there are additional waypoints it could get confused as to which one will be reached sooner (although I don't see why it should; it knows the distance).

Anyway, if you note that it is in the wrong order, just hold down the right end of the gas station line and drag the item into the right spot then click OK. It will then provide the route in the correct order.

Most of the time when I add a waypoit to a route while riding it does not end up in the correct order. If there's a lot of waypoints it can be difficult to know where to place it.
For me it requires too much time taking my eyes off the road.

Exactly Lee. That's why I'm not sure what really happened. It's always worked well before. I suppose I won't be able to recreate this in the future. The nav does ask if you want to add to the current route or make a new one, and I click the add to route. Oh well. I still really like the nav 6

Hi All, I have just returned from a nice fall ride to eat. Went to the Wagon Wheel in Gill, MA for breakfast. Great food there all made with local ingredients. Blueberry pancakes, bacon and coffee sets me up for the day. However . . . I seem to have joined the cult of Spastic Navigators. My Nav6 has always been reliable until this ride. I didn't have a route going, so just having the map showing the current position etc. But the thing was acting like someone was inputing the screen over and over. Mostly in the lower right corner, but also selecting a position from the map and then routing to it. Making mew selections all over the place. The damn thing ended up erasing all my user data with no input from me. Grrrrr! I assumed this was dirt on the screen, so cleaned it several times with no effect. On arrival home, with the Nav off the bike, it seems to be working normally. Any ideas? Can the bike create input to the screen somehow? Actually, at one point I pulled over and took the Nav out of the cradle and rebooted it. Didn't fix anything at that time.

So I'm confused. Any thoughts? Is this similar to what was described earlier in the thread?

Erratic behaviour all by itself is similar enough. The last fix for Darrel's unit was to uninstall all maps and reinstall them and that may do the trick. I suggest trying that before calling Garmin Support (which has been good in replacing these units).

If it was me I would call in so they could step me through what to do and this way there's a record of the problem.
I like easy and would hope for a new unit.

OK. I have hooked up to my computer. I needed the 2021 map anyway, and it turns out the software had an update too. This completed the touch screen seems much more reactive that it has been in the past. Maybe I should say more sensitive. The thing seems to be working well. No to go for a ride and see if it works on the bike. I have two more days of good weather to get that done :-)

Test ride done today. Unit ran fine for about 2 minutes. Then whammo, all haywire again. So back at the house I went online to Garmin and did a chat with Debi. My initial inquiry detailed the issue. Her initial response, 'stand by, I'm working up an exchange'. Pretty good service! So I'm still a satisfied Garmin customer.
