Keyless Ride fuel cap release failed today

(06-03-2023, 10:56 AM)Ray Wrote: So - with the OK from my physical therapist and physical medicine specialists, was packing today for the trip southeast (slingshot by way of Eminence, MO, of course) packing the bike. Started playing with the gas cap. Still only unlocking intermittently.

  1. Locking mechanism looked clean as a whistle - but blown out with the filtered compressed air and re-lubed anyway. No effect.
  2. Potential interfernce from the phone was removed without effect.
  3. Turning off and on does not consistently work.
  4. Will still (though now inconsistently) open after all the boards shut off a couple minutes after turning off the ingnition.
  5. (Killing with the kickstand and leaving on - no luck)

So after 43 seconds with Dremel against soft alloy, I now have a latching, but not locking, gas cap and no fears of taking away from riding time to fix this on the road.

Thanks for letting us know this mod works.
Have a fun trip.

Hmmmm ... so solution is to cut off the circled bit if you don't mind not locking. I have to have a close look at mine when I get back to see how it locks.

Knock on wood but mine has not given me any issues in the 7 years I have had the bike and I have a Givi tank ring fitted as well. I do seem to recall too much tightening of the screws around the filler cap assembly has an effect on the performance of the latching mechanism, but once I solved that while installing the Givi tank ring it never presented any problems so I claim no expertise in the Keyless Gas Cap issue.

It would nevertheless be nice to have a solution that does not involve Dremel surgery, but now one can argue about the removal of potential unlocking drama ...

On my 2020, the gas cap won't unlock until the ignition is turned off.  Stopping the motor with the kill switch isn't enough to unlock the cap.

Ditto for me on my two BMW's: 2020 R1250RS and 2022 K1600GT - the gas cap will not open with the ignition "on"

Same here. I just double checked it and unless the ignition is off the cap will not release. Using the kill switch only = no gas cap open.

I have not read the whole post but what if you interrupted the power supply to the lock?

The cap will only release for a short time after the ignition switch is turned off. If you wait too long it does not unlock.

Did this modification work well without any surprises on your recent trip?

The latch mechanism is untouched. It does not lock. It works perfectly. It feels like it always did, but there is no longer a sense of foreboding when I lift the tab.

Sounds perfect. I'll do the same when warranty is up.

I'm on the hunt for a spare cap for my 2020 so I can modify it and maintain the original in it's original condition since I have the BMW extended warranty for another 3 years. Hopefully one turns up soon.
